Klein Matterhorn via Riffelberg: route and tickets

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named CyrusK is planning a trip in the first week of January to travel from Zermatt to Klein Matterhorn. They want to enjoy the scenic train ride to Riffelberg and then take a cable car but are unsure how to purchase the tickets separately. They're seeking guidance on ticket options and any potential discounts.

Key takeaways:

Consider the Peak2Peak ticket if you're visiting during the times it's available, but also check individual ticket prices as it may save you money. Tickets can be bought at the ticket office or online, but avoid buying too far in advance due to weather uncertainties. Use the SBB timetable for easier journey planning. If you plan to explore Switzerland more, look into a rail pass for additional discounts.

Hi there, I am planning to visit from Zermatt to Klein Matterhorn however I would wish to enjoy the train ride halfway and then cable car up as plan below, I am not able to find information like how I can purchase the ticket separately.

    1. Start from Zermatt to Riffelberg by cog-wheel train ride to enjoy the scenery

    2. Take cable car from Riffelberg to Furi ( I am not sure if there is any ticket that allow me to do this, and the rest below )

    3. Take cable car from Furi to Trockener Steg and to Klein Matterhorn and return back to Zermatt

I don’t mind to do it the other way round if its possible.

Would appreciate your advise and guidance if this is workable and how can I purchase the ticket? Would really be thankful for all the guidance and help.

    Hi CyrusK,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Thank you for sharing your travel plans to Zermatt.

Ticket wise you may want to consider a Peak2Peak ticket but this will depend when you are visiting as this is only available certain times of the year. More information here:

If not, yes individual tickets can be purchased at the ticket office or online. Don’t buy too long in advance, incase the weather is not favourable.

    1. Board the cog wheel train to Gornergrat and alight at Riffelberg. More details on getting there here:

2&3. To reach Furi from Riffelberg, you’d need to take the Riffelberg Express, which depending when you are visiting, it may not be in operation. More information and details regarding the route to Klein Matterhorn here:

Do use the SBB timetable to research your journeys too.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Hi Yolanda,

Thank you very much for your advise and link. Extremely grateful I found this forum.

I will be visiting on the first week of January 2024. Glad that peak2peak and riffelberg express is also available in January with your link.

I am actually trying to calculate roughly which option would be lower in cost,

if i were to purchase ticket separately or purchasing peak2peak, however not able to find at which web i could briefly find the pricing for individual ride ticket

    Riffelberg express to furi

Furi to Trockener Steg and to Klein Matterhorn and return back to Zermatt

Appreciate your kind help and suggestion. As most web show me by package or full ride from Zermatt

Got it about the weather, thanks for the tip.

    Hi CyrusK,

You can research individual pricing here:

For the cost of the Peak2Peak ticket, in the Klein Matterhorn link provided earlier, if you scroll to “More information” at the bottom of the “Tickets” page, you should find pricing in the website there. Adult full price is around CHF150.

I am not sure how long you are in Switzerland for and if you have other Swiss travel plans whilst here. If there are, it may make sense to look into a rail pass – depending on the pass you could receive discounts for your Zermatt travel too.

All about rail passes here: https://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
