Lake Thun boats: schedules and Swiss Travel Pass

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Borahae is planning a boat cruise on Lake Thun for December 27 and wants to know if the cruise runs daily this month and if it stops at Iseltwald. Additionally, Borahae is checking whether the cruise is covered by the Swiss Travel Pass.

Key takeaways:
  • Boat cruises on Lake Thun are limited in December, so check the timetable for specific days.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass covers boat rides on Lake Thun, making it a cost-effective option.
  • To reach Iseltwald in winter, take a bus from Interlaken Ost, as boat services are not available.
  • You can plan a day trip to Bern, Blausee, and Spiez, combining train and boat for an enjoyable journey.

Hi everyone..I’m new to this forum. I need some help. I have a question about lake thun boat cruise. I try to look for the scheduled but I’m not sure if I got the right one. Does the cruise run everyday this month? I plan to go on the cruise on the 12/27. Does this cruise pass the iseltwald? Or I have to go on a separate boat to stop at the iseltwald? And if not mistaken, this cruise is covered by swiss pass? TIA!

    Hi Borahae,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Yes, boat trips on Lake Thun and Lake Brienz are free with the Swiss Travel Pass. Unfortunately the boat services on Lake Brienz do not operate during the winter season. During this period, you can reach Iseltwald by bus from Interlaken Ost. If you are interested in taking a cruise, there are limited services on Lake Thun in December. You can use the timetable to check boat schedules (use the advaced mode and select ship only). Alternatively you can view the printable timetable on the official website here: http://www.bls-schiff.ch/sites/default/files/2022-12/Timetable_BLS-Lake-Cruise_2022-23.pdf

Let us know if you need more info.

    regards,

    Anna

Hi Anna. Thank you so much for your reply. I’m sorry I have so many questions. This will be my 3rd time to Switzerland but I never travel using the swiss pass before. We rent a car . This time we decided to take the swiss pass to travel to zermatt and then stay at interlaken and go around with the pass. So lake breinz is the one that goes to iseltwald. Is there any train from interlaken to iseltwald? Or just bus? I’m staying at interlaken . The lake thun time table, any website with english? Does it say only operate on sunday? I try to book a ticket just to see is there any boat running. It looks like they do but I’m not sure.

Over the Christmas holiday period December 25 – January 2, there are two boats every day along the Thunersee – one of which is the paddle steamer, which is the most fun to go on. Anna has already given you the link to the timetable, which is in three languages including English.

Iseltwald is on the south side of the Brienzersee, not served by boats in winter, nor the railway which is on the north side of the lake. However there is no real reason to visit Iseltwald. It has become a cliched ‘must see’ but there are hundreds of other villages and lakeside villages in Switzerland that are just as nice.

Hi 1960man. Thank you for your reply. When I download the link, I didn’t see in English. I’ll check again. As for iseltwald, only by bus? Can you give me suggestions where to go? I plan to go to lake blausee and bern. If I had time, I want to revisit lautrenben. When I when there last time I didn’t get to walk around. Only passing on my way to grinderwald by car.

    Hi Borahae,

The printable timetable provides information in German, French and English. In winter, you can reach Iseltwald by bus or car. In other seasons, you can reach it by boat from Brienz or Interlaken Ost.

If you’re planning a day trip to Blausee and Bern and would like to include a boat trip along the way, perhaps a good option would be to take the boat from Thun to Spiez. So your route would Bern – Thun -boat to Spiez – train/bus to Blausee. You can use the Swiss timetable to check schedules and plan your journey.

    regards,

    Anna

    Hi Anna,

When you said boat from thun -spiez, is that a different boat with lake thun cruises or the same? With the route that you gave me, so I can Visit all 3 destinations in 1 day right? That’s what I’m trying to figure out as well.

Anna has provided what you need. The bls Thunersee website includes maps showing the Lake and the boat routes. Thun is the main city at the north end of the lake named after it. Spiez is to the south on the South east shore of the lake. Interlaken is at the south west end of the lake. All the villages shown on the timetable are served by the boats shown
