Multiple day hike from Lauterbrunnen to Kandersteg in August

Short summary – read this first

Tanner and his partner are planning an early trip to the Bernese Oberland in June. They are experienced hikers and want to confirm their hiking itinerary from Lauterbrunnen to Kandersteg. They appreciate any advice on their route and potential challenges, especially regarding weather conditions and logistics.

Key takeaways:
  • Use the hiking app Schweizmobil to compare your routes for better planning.
  • Be aware of potential snow at higher elevations in June, as it can affect your hiking plans.
  • Bringing water shoes might be helpful for crossing streams, especially during snowmelt.
  • Consider checking weather conditions closer to your trip to adjust your route if needed.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass can be a great option for easy train travel between cities.

    Hi everyone,

My partner and I are planning a trip to the Bernese Oberland next June 2025 (we like to plan things early, it gives us something to look forward to!). We are both quite experienced hikers, having done most of the great walks in New Zealand. I would just appreciate if someone could confirm that my plan/itinerary for this particular hike to Kandersteg will work.

    Day 1:

    • Start in Lauterbrunnen, take the cable car/train to Mürren
    • Do the Mürren via ferrata
    • Take the gondola to Schilthorn
    • Walk down Rote Härd to the Rotstockhütte

    Day 2:

    • Walk to the Sefinafurgga
    • Head south (uphill) from Sefinafurgga towards the Gspaltenhornhütte
    • Pass by the Gspaltenhornhütte and carry on to the Blüemlisalphütte (this way I’m hoping to avoid going via Griesalp, where you down 1200m just to go back up 1400m)

    Day 3:

    • Walk down from the Blüemlisalphütte to the Oeschinensee and have a swim
    • Walk to the Rodelbahn and take it down to Kandersteg
    • Take the train to Zürich and hopefully arrive before 7:30pm to catch an overnight train to Slovenia

If anyone has any insight or advice, or even if someone could just confirm that this will work, I would super appreciate it 🙂

    Thanks in advance,

    Tanner

    Hi Guys!

Your plan sounds great! I tried to do this walk years ago, but got stopped by heavy snow (In August) which forced me down to Griesalp after I crossed the Sefinnefurgga (solo hiker – I didn’t want to chance it). In good weather, this would be a magic hike.

    Have Fun!

    Hi Tanner,

You have chosen one of the most scenic areas of the Alps, in my opinion! If weather permits you to carry out your plan, it will be spectacular!

Although I cannot comment on all parts of your plans, here is some of my input:

I have hiked up to the Rotstock from Mûrren several times ( I have never gone from the Shilthorn).  The Rotstock is a charming rustic hut.

From the Rotstock hut, I was able to go up to the top of the Sefinenfurgee in mid-late June 2022 (around the 18th) , but not in June 2023 (also around the 18th), due to too much snow.  Keep in mind also that when there is snow higher up, the small rivers of roaring water are a challenge to cross. You might want to bring water shoes.  (The top of the Sefinenfurgee is absolutely breathtaking!!!!)

Since I also had to plan these trips months in advance ( I live in Canada), I did not take the chance to assume I could cross the Sefinenfugee. So what I did is hike in the Murren area for a few days; then I took the train & bus to Griesalp and from there hiked up to the Gspaltenhorn hut (awesome!).  I also wanted to hike up to the Bluemlisalp hut from Griesalp last year, but it was not recommended due to snow. So I had to make a big detour and take the train to Kandersteg, and hike up from there. The view from the Bluemlisalp hut is fantastic!

So I hope this helps a little bit.
All the best planning out your trip.

    Monica
