Lauterbrunnen-Schilthorn round trip: most scenic + quicker options?

Short summary – read this first

Wig is planning a Lauterbrunnen to Schilthorn round trip and is unsure if the scenic route or the opposite direction is better for avoiding crowds and ensuring a quicker trip. They also want to know about purchasing tickets at the train station or online, considering variable weather conditions for backup plans.

Key takeaways:
  • Purchase tickets online or at the station on the day of your visit for flexibility in case of weather changes.
  • Enjoy the scenic walk between Gimmelwald and Mürren, which takes about an hour and offers breathtaking views.
  • Use the Swiss Travel Pass for discounted travel, as it covers routes like Mürren to Schilthorn.

We plan to do the Lauterbrunnen to Schilthorn Round Trip in this direction. Is this the best way for scenic option or should we do it the opposite way? Does going the opposite way get you in quicker to Schilthorn and with less crowds?  Thanks

Another question sorry. Do we buy the STP discounted Schilthorn Round trips at the train station or is there a separate station to buy tickets for the cable car round trip?
Given weather uncertainties in Swiss alps want to have back up days for Zermatt, Jungfrauch, Schilthorn, Harder Kulm and Schynige Platte. Will check night before and switch around these attractions based on weather and visibility, as bad day in one maybe Good day in another. That’s why I am thinking of purchasing tickets at the station rather than online. May purchase Gornergrat priority board when in Zermatt.
    Does this sound doable.

    Thank you once again

    Hi Wig,

Even if your plans change or you are waiting to see how the weather will be for your mountain visits, you can still purchase your tickets conveniently online.

Your plans to visit Schilthorn are doable and both routes are scenic 🙂  I am not sure if you have come across our Schilthorn guide. Do take a read when you have a moment. Lots of useful and practical information regarding a visit to Schilthorn, as well as online ticket options, which will take into consideration that you will have the Swiss Travel Pass.

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda

I did read the Schilthorn guide. Very helpful. Thank you
    question though
If I buy online, I have to select a date. If weather impedes my travel on that day am I allowed to change date for online ticket purchase.

We did a similar thing, except that on the return journey we walked from Murren down to Gimmelwald which was lovely.

We simply booked our Schilthorn tickets on the SBB app over breakfast that morning, there was no need to do it earlier than that.

    Hi Wig,
I noted that one of the focus item in your query was “Scenic”.
That being the case, since you have plans to be in Gimmelwald and Murren, You must do the scenic walk  between these 2 locations (doesn’t matter which direction).
Its no more than a max 1 hr. walk on nice paved road (no rock /uneven terrain).
The views are just breathtaking, and the slow walk enjoying the scenery is just greater than a fast train ride.
Deb H, already mentioned this in her reply #4, and I would reinforce that you please plan it and enjoy that walk and you wont regret it.
Also, plan to spend 1-2 hrs in Zermatt village and the ambiance there is amazing with the mountains in the back drop and the river flowing in the middle of the village.
You shouldn’t miss  Aare river gorge and Trummelbach falls visits, since you are going to be in the region.
    Have a great trip.

Thanks Ram. We are going to Zermatt taking Roger’s suggestion of modified Glacier / regional trains RE 41/42. Gornergrat,  and yes we will enjoy Zermatt too.

    Best regards

    Hi Wig,

Just in regard to your reply 3, yes you are correct, when you are booking online, a date needs to be selected.

Any of the trusted sellers in the Schilthorn link, you can easily purchase your tickets on the morning or day that you plan to visit 🙂

    Have a wonderful trip.

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda

FYI TO anyone else who might want to do the James Bond Brunch
Schilthorn.Ch website has discounted round trips with Swiss travel pass round trips, James Bond Brunch included.
I believe Lauterbrunnen to Murren is free via cable car and Murren and the descent Murren to Gimmelwald to Stechelberg to Lauterbrunnen is free with Swiss Travel Pass?
However they offer only 2 options from Murren, 7.30 and 9 AM

Think I got that right Yolanda? Thanks

    Hi Wig,

To reach Schilthorn when traveling with a Swiss Travel Pass, travel to Mürren is included.  You would only need to purchase a ticket for the section Mürren to Schilthorn, which would be discounted.

With regard to the routes you have described, these are included.  You can view the Swiss Travel Pass validity map in the link below.

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda
