Linking my Swiss rail passes to SBB app?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Rlyons9999 is trying to link their Swiss Half Fare Card and the Berner Oberland Pass to the SBB app. They are unsure about the customer number needed for linking and seek clarification about the app's functionality. Also, they plan to travel to Wengen in July and ask for advice on the train routes from Zurich through either Bern or Lucerne.

Key takeaways:
  • You don't need to link your Swiss Half Fare Card or Berner Oberland Pass to the SBB app; you can buy discounted tickets without an account.
  • Traveling from Zurich to Wengen via Bern is faster, taking around 2 hours 40 minutes, while the route through Lucerne is about an hour longer.
  • The route via Lucerne is considered more scenic, so if you prefer a beautiful view and don't mind the longer journey, choose this option.

I have the SBB app on my mobile phone and recently purchased both a Swiss Half Fare Card and the BOP. I am trying to link these on my account. The App is asking for my customer number so that I can display my SwissPass on the SBB Mobile. I see a Ticket ID with 12 digits and an Order number with 11 digits but am not seeing a customer ID. Can you please set me straight. Many thanks.

    Hello Rlyons9999,

You don’t actually need to add your Swiss Half Fare Card or your Berner Oberland Pass to the SBB app. Adding products to an SBB account is mainly meant for Swiss residents. Many have a ‘SwissPass’ account to which they can add their ‘Half-Fare Travelcard’. This is different from your Swiss Half Fare Card. You can still buy your 50% discounted tickets wherever you want without any account.

I am assuming both your Swiss Half Fare Card and Berner Oberland Pass have been delivered to you digitally, as a PDF? You can just upload it your to mobile wallet or show the PDF copy/QR code upon inspection. You may want to also have a backup printout, so you still have something to show if your phone is not working.

    More information here:

I hope this clarifies. Do reach out if you have any further questions.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

Many thanks for your reply and clarification. One additional question: We will be flying to Zurich in July and taking the train to Wengen. I understand that the train to Wengen can go through Bern or Lucerne. Can you provide some insight on the pros and cons of choosing one over the other. Regards, Ron

    Hi Rlyons9999,

Taking the train from Zurich to Wengen via Bern is faster (2hr 40 mins). If you travel via Lucerne, the journey takes an hour longer. The SBB timetable always displays the fastest connection.

In terms of cost, the ticket from Zurich Airport to Bern is slightly more expensive (about CHF28 with the Swiss Half Fare Card). The ticket from Zurich Airport to Lucerne is about CHF15 with the Swiss Half Fare Card. With the Berner Oberland Pass, travel is free from Lucerne to Wengen and Bern to Wengen.

    Regards,

    Anna

Anna – Thanks for your prompt reply. My apologies that my question was not clearer. I was looking to determine if either route was significantly more aesthetic. Separately, how do I identify which trains are first vs second class. Have a great weekend. Ron

    Hello Ron,

You will find on the outside of the train carriages will have either “1” or “2” on them, for 1st or 2nd class. More information here:

In regard to the more aesthetically pleasing route to Wengen. Albeit a longer journey, some find the route via Lucerne more scenic as it follows the GoldenPass route to Interlaken. Should you choose to take this route, just make sure when researching times via the timetable, to key in “via Lucerne” otherwise, as mentioned by Anna, it will default to the quickest route via Bern.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
