Lucerne Interlaken Express: seat selection

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Mary Beth is planning a trip on the Luzern to Interlaken Express and has reserved seats 119-122 in carriage #3. She wants to confirm if those seats are on the right side of the train for the best views and appreciates any advice on this.

Key takeaways:
  • Seats on the Luzern to Interlaken Express might not need to be reserved since many travelers have easily changed sides during stops.
  • While you've made reservations, views can be enjoyed from either side, so don't worry too much if you can't sit where you originally planned.
  • It's common for trains in Switzerland to have multiple options each hour, so there's usually plenty of capacity for travelers.

    Greetings,

I made seat reservations on the Luzern to Interlaken Express because I want to ensure I have seats on the right side of the train for the best view. However, the Zentralbahn website indicates the train travels in both directions, so I couldn’t determine which side of the train was the front for this trip. Therefore, I’m not certain whether the seats I selected are on the left or right side of the train.

I chose seats 119 -122 on carriage #3 (train 2924). Are these on the right side of the train going from Luzern to Interlaken? I appreciate any assistance!

We’ve taken the Luzern Interlaken Express several times during prior trips, and never made or needed a reservation. We sat on the right side of the train when leaving Luzern; the front of the train is farthest away from the main concourse in the Luzern station, since most of the tracks more or less “dead end” on the station main entrance side. The train does reverse direction in Meiringen, so that’s why it travels in “both directions.” However, we always found it quite easy to simply move from one side to another at that stop. We traveled in late September & early October, so crowds were less than in prime season, and never had a problem with picking our seats.

And the windows on those trains are pretty big. You’ll be able to see just about anything from either side of the train if all the seats on one side are taken; which we never encountered on that route.

There is little point in reserving seats on any trains in Switzerland (98% of trains don’t require reservations) for two reasons:

    1) views change all the time and the many views can be from both sides of the train.

    2) The majority of all railway lines in Switzerland have a minimum of one train every hour – and often more frequent than that, and trains have a passenger high capacity

    Hi Mary Beth,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Seat reservation on the Lucerne-Interlaken Express is not compulsory but you can make reservation if you want to. Unfortunately you can’t tell which direction of travel it is when you book the seats online.

Thanks for your reply. Hopefully, there will be plenty of capacity so we can change sears if desired.
