Lucerne to Mt. Pilatus with Swiss Travel Pass

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Lucerne with their family later this month and wants to visit Mt. Pilatus. They are considering purchasing Swiss Travel Passes and need guidance on booking tickets without the boat ride option, along with seat reservations.

Key takeaways:
  • You will receive a 50% discount on the cable car/train from Kriens or Alpnachstad to Mt. Pilatus with your Swiss Travel Pass.
  • Avoid buying the Silver or Gold Round Trip options as the boat ride is already free with the Swiss Travel Pass.
  • Only book tickets closer to your visit for better weather accuracy, ideally the day before.

    Hi there,

My family and I will be travelling to Lucern later this month and would like to take a trip to Mt. Pilatus. We are thinking of buying Swiss Travel Passes. Can someone please tell me how to book tickets to this location from Luzern to ensure we get the correct discounts using the SWiss Travel Pass . We are not interested in the boat ride option – would this mean we want the Silver Round Pass? Or other? How do we reserve our seats as well? and can we do this all in advance. Thanks

    Hello triciaf,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

The section with the cable car/train from Kriens or Alpnachstad to Pilatus, you would receive a 50% discount with your Swiss Travel Pass. The rest of your travel from Lucerne is free with your Swiss Travel Pass.

More details on the Swiss Travel Pass in the below link, including coverage, discounts, purchase options, how to use:

Here’s our handy link for Mt.Pilatus.

and do plan your trip via the SBB timetable: https://www.myswissalps.com/timetable

If you navigate to the “tickets” tab, you will see some purchase options. That said, we do advise travelers to book nearer the time purely due to the weather. Weather in the mountains can change quite rapidly, it would be a shame to book tickets and then not be able to enjoy the views. You’ll find the weather forecast quite accurate a few days beforehand.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

With a Swiss Travel Pass don’t pay for either the Silver or the Gold Round trip because those include (for a portion of the fee) a boat ride or train ride that you get for free with the STP. Go to the Pilatus website and look for tickets that only include the Cog Train up and the cable cars down (or vice versa). The website lets you specify you have a Swiss Travel Pass, which gives you a reduced price. The train ride to/from Alpnachstad and the bus to/from Kriens is free to you with your STP.

Thank you PAPirate. Exactly the info I was looking for. Didn’t want to pay for something that was already included with the STP. Thanks again.

Your Pilatus price should be 39 CHF per person (with the STP) for Alpnachstad to Kriens (or vice versa).

Oh, they also now offer the ability to reserve a seat on a particular Cog Train if you want. An added 5 CHF per person.

However, I would not book any of this until the weather is known. Perhaps the day before??? But I do know you are going to be there in busy July. So it’s a matter of risk when to buy, I suppose. I won’t be there until September, so I will probably book the day before or morning of.

    Thanks PAPirate,

Yes, the Swiss Travel Pass has many benefits, it’s practical and you can pretty much hop on/hop off trains, buses and boats. There are even free museum entrances with the pass. When you have a moment, take a look in the “where it’s valid” tab in the link I provided earlier. There is also a good summary of the mountain transportation that you will need to buy a discounted tickets for, if you were planning on visiting any of them.

In your case, for Mt.Pilatus, once you know when you will visit you can also buy your ticket here:

Scroll to “Tickets for an independent day trip to Mount Pilatus”, just indicate that you will have a Swiss Travel Pass and your discount will be applied.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
