Self-guided trip to Mt. Rigi: tickets and how to get there?

Short summary – read this first

A couple is planning a two-day trip to Lucerne in early June and wants to visit Mt. Rigi independently. They are seeking advice on logistics, ticketing options, and seating arrangements for their trip to ensure a smooth experience.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider purchasing a Saver Day Pass for each person, as it covers the entire trip to Mt. Rigi from Lucerne and is cost-effective.
  • To sit on the upper deck of the boat, you will need first-class tickets, but you can upgrade from a second-class ticket if preferred.
  • It's possible to buy point-to-point tickets on the day or the day before, but the Saver Day Pass is usually cheaper.

My wife and I will be in Lucerne for two days in early June and would like to go to Mt. Rigi on my own and not as part of a tour group. I know we have to take the boat from Lucerne to Vitznau and then the cogwheel train from there. But I need help with the logistics and the ticketing. What is the best and easiest way for me to arrange this trip? Can we get an all inclusive Day Pass for each of us that would cover the boat and the train or do we need a ticket for each? Do we need to get a round trip ticket so we can get back to Lucerne? We want to have free range of seating on the boat (upper level) so do we need first class tickets? Can I get tickets the day before our trip? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Skipwiley,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

All information for a visit to Mt. Rigi, including the various ticket types you can purchase for a day trip to Rigi can be found in the below link:

I recommend you look into a Saver Day Pass (if available for your day of travel) for each of you. It will cover your trip to Mt.Rigi return from Lucerne (and all of Switzerland, incase you wanted to go elsewhere too on the day).  All  Saver Day Pass details below, with some online purchase options too:

There are also the regular point-to-point tickets you can purchase on the day or day before, should you wish to wait but the Saver Day Pass would be cheaper.

Yes, 1st class would be required if you wanted to sit on the upper deck on the boat, you can also just upgrade for the boat section if you had a 2nd class ticket (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/train/classes/.  The cogwheel train is 2nd class only.

    Have a great trip.

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda

Thank you, Yolanda. I appreciate your helpful response. We are taking a Viking cruise down the Rhine, ending up in Basel and then two extra days in Lucerne. Can’t wait to see beautiful Switzerland! I will most likely get a Saver Day Pass for each of us. And as I understand it, that will take care of our boat trip to Vitznau, the cogwheel train to Rigi Kulm, as well as our return. Very exciting!!
