There are essentially three ways to travel Lugano – Zermatt:

    1) Lugano – Milano Centrale – Brig/Visp – Zermatt (All inter-city trains except for the last leg up to Zermatt)

    2) via Locarno as you have already noted. If this is coming up as the quickest then you are well off, as it is the famous Centovalli route, scenic (for valleys and gorges more than mountains)

    3) Lugano – Göschenen – Andermatt – Brig – Zermatt. This is the link to part of the so called ‘Glacier Express’ route (actually the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB) railway). From Andermatt westwards you would see only one of the four ‘spectacular’ sections of the GE route

Thanks you 1960Man, glad to know I was on the right path. Some of the travel planning is a little more challenging than I thought when wanting to keep to a specific itinerary

    Cheers!
