Luggage on trains in Switzerland
A traveler is planning a scenic train trip in Switzerland with her daughter this December. They're unsure about handling their large luggage on the trains and would like tips on managing their journey, as they will be traveling one way without returning to a hotel.
- Swiss Travel Pass can be a great option for flexibility and savings on multiple journeys.
- Check the train timetable ahead to minimize changes and ensure smooth connections.
- Reservations are required for the Bernina Express, so make sure to plan that in advance.
- For large suitcases, confirm the luggage policies on the trains to ensure comfortable travel.

Hi! My daughter and I are planning to take as many scenic train journeys as possible in December. However, as we’re touring Europe, we’ll have a LARGE suitcase each and a regular backpack. Are the tourist trains set up to carry these? We’ll only be doing each one way, so can’t return to a hotel.
We’re planning on doing
Cologne-Basel by panoramic train
Basel-Montreux
Montreux-Zweisimmen on Belle Epoque, changing to Golden Pass panoramic to Lucerne
Lucerne – Zurich
Zurich – Chur
Chur-Tirano on Bernina Express
Coming from rural South Australia, I’m not accustomed to train travel and trying to avoid having to change trains where possible, as the concept terrifies me! ANY help is much appreciated, and I’ll have about a million more questions!
