Hi! My daughter and I are planning to take as many scenic train journeys as possible in December. However, as we’re touring Europe, we’ll have a LARGE suitcase each and a regular backpack. Are the tourist trains set up to carry these? We’ll only be doing each one way, so can’t return to a hotel.

    We’re planning on doing

    Cologne-Basel by panoramic train

    Basel-Montreux

Montreux-Zweisimmen on Belle Epoque, changing to Golden Pass panoramic to Lucerne

    Lucerne – Zurich

    Zurich – Chur

    Chur-Tirano on Bernina Express

Coming from rural South Australia, I’m not accustomed to train travel and trying to avoid having to change trains where possible, as the concept terrifies me! ANY help is much appreciated, and I’ll have about a million more questions!

    Hello Leehotline66,

    Welcome to the MySwissAlps forum.

Thanks for your sharing your plans for December and wonderful you are going to be enjoying some of the scenic train rides here!

You can read all about luggage storage on trains in this handy link: https://www.myswissalps.com/train/practical/luggage

Planning your train journeys via the timetable link is helpful too: https://www.myswissalps.com/timetable. Within, you will be able to see how many changes would be required. Don’t worry, the train system here is very efficient and easy to navigate around. Any changes, the platforms are typically very closeby.

With the Bernina Express, reservations are required. More information here: https://www.myswissalps.com/berninaexpress/tickets and here is our summary link to the most popular scenic train trips in Switzerland (GoldenPass and the Bernina Express are included)

I am unsure if you have decided on a rail pass yet for your trip but take a look here for the various options and also a link for travel from Germany:

I hope this helps, do reach out if you have further questions.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

Thank you so much for your reply and the links, Yolanda.

As we’re now extending the end of the trip to Venice, then hoping to sort a train back to London before going to Paris to fly home, I’m thinking a Eurail ticket is possibly the best way to go, tehn just (hopefully!) pay reservation fees on top of that. Any advice gratefully received!

    Regards,

    Lee

    Hello again Lee,

Sure thing. Here is our guide to the Eurail Pass, take a look at the coverage map and see if it covers all the places you are planning on visiting. There’s also tips on how to use, where to buy.

If you wanted to carry out a few calculations via our “how to choose a rail pass” link, you can do so here, that way you can be sure you have the “right” pass:

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
