Luzern-Interlaken Express same as Golden Pass?

Short summary – read this first

Kenni, a traveler, is planning a trip from Luzern to Interlaken Ost on April 25, 2024, with a group of friends. They want to know if the panoramic GoldenPass train is the same as the Luzern-Interlaken Express, how to board, and where to sit for the best views, while also confirming details about the Berner Oberland Pass. Any insight about their journey would be appreciated.

Key takeaways:
  • The Luzern-Interlaken Express is indeed part of the GoldenPass route and features large panoramic windows for great views.
  • Reservations for 1st class seats are not necessary but can be made online, and choosing seats on the right side provides the best views.
  • The Berner Oberland Pass can be purchased up to 6 months in advance, so aim to buy it in November or December for an April trip.

We’re a group of 4 adults traveling from Luzern to Interlaken Ost April 25, 2024. We’ll each have 1st class Berner Oberland Pass . When we depart Luzern we’d like to take the scenic train route, is the panoramic GoldenPass the same as the Luzern-Interlaken Express? When we’re boarding in Luzern do we board the Zentralbahn Luzern-Interlaken Express train or is there another train at the Luzern train station called the GoldenPass Luzern to Interlaken? From what I’ve read, we should reserve our first class seats on the left side of the train Luzern to Interlaken Ost for the best views, is that correct? The Berner Oberland Pass is available to purchase February 2024/March 2024 for use beginning April 1, 2024, correct? Any insight you can give is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help. You have a wonderful Forum.

    Thanks,

    Kenni

    Hi Kenni,

Yes, the Lucerne – Interlaken Express is part of the Golden Pass line. You can read a full description of the Golden Pass route here: http://www.myswissalps.com/goldenpass/gettingthere. There are also regular trains travelling on this route between Lucerne and Interlaken Ost.

The Lucerne – Interlaken Express is a scenic train featuring large panoramic windows so you can enjoy the great views throughout your journey. This service runs every hour. And yes, you can ride the Lucerne – Interlaken Express for free with a Berner Oberland Pass. Seat reservation is not necessary but possible on the Zentralbahn website: see the links at https://www.myswissalps.com/goldenpass/tickets. You can check the train schedules on the SBB timetable: http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable.

You can purchase the Berner Oberland Pass online here: http://www.myswissalps.com/regionalpassberneseoberland/price. According to the official website the pass is available for purchase up to 6 months in advance. So for a trip in April 2024, please try booking in November or December.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anna

We’ve taken the Luzern-Interlaken Express route several times in the last 5 years in 1st class. We’ve found the right side of the train offers better views between Luzern & Brunig Pass and on to Meiringen. The train reverses direction between Meiringen & Interlaken Ost. But since 1st class isn’t usually crowded, you can basically take whatever seat on whatever side of the train you want. At least that was our experience in September/October. We’ve never made any seat reservations.

    Have fun!
