Lucerne-Interlaken Ost train: how to book seats on the right side?

Short summary – read this first

Sharon is planning a trip from Luzern to Interlaken Ost on June 15, 2025, and is seeking help with making seat reservations on the train. She's unsure if the seats assigned by the booking system are on the right side of the train, where the best views are. She's staying in Luzern and will be using a Tell Pass during her travels.

Key takeaways:
  • For trains in Switzerland, seat reservations are usually not necessary unless traveling in a large group.
  • Check train occupancy rates using the Swiss timetable or the SBB app for better seat choices.
  • If you want to enjoy the best views on the Luzern-Interlaken Express, aim for lower seat rows on the right side.

    Hello,
I’m looking into making seat reservations (2nd class) for the Luzern to Interlaken Ost train.  We will be staying in Luzern in June and will have a Tell Pass.
On their website it’s stated to best sit on the right side of the train.  I’m having a difficult time figuring out which direction the train is going on their booking page.
Travel date:  June 15, 2025 on the 9:06 train (Luzern to Interlaken Ost).  The website chose Coach 3, seats 103 and 105.  Are those seats on the right side of the train? I did not make the seat reservation yet and seating diagram is attached.  Thank you for your assistance!

    Hi Sharon,

You would want to book the lower seat rows in the booking platform.

In general, seat reservations are not necessary on Swiss trains (unless you are traveling in a group and would like to be seated together).  So, you’ll probably find you can find a seat to your liking on the Lucerne-Interlaken Express (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/goldenpass/).  This train runs every hour so may not be overly busy anyways.

You can research occupancy rates using the Swiss timetable, scroll to “How to find details for your train: occupancy, reservation options, amenities”.

    Have a great trip.

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda

Thank you, Yolanda.  We will hold off on making any seat reservations until we get closer to our trip.  Thank you for suggesting the SBB app to check train occupancy status.
