Mid-December hike(s) in Lauterbrunnen area

Short summary – read this first

Scott is planning a one-day visit to the Lauterbrunnen area on December 11th and is seeking suggestions for scenic hikes. He's considering the Northface Trail loop to Mürren and possibly hiking down to Gimmelwald and Stechelberg, but wants to know about the trail conditions in early winter. He also mentions the option of visiting Wengen for alternative trails.

Key takeaways:
  • Check if the trails are open as winter hiking paths when you arrive in Lauterbrunnen.
  • Consult local sources like the railway station and tourism office for the latest trail conditions.
  • Consider using the Swiss Travel Pass for convenient access to trains and trams in the region.
  • Check online resources for updates on which hikes and services are operational during your visit.

    Hi everyone!

I will have one day to spend in the Lauterbrunnen area on December 11th. I’m very much into scenic hikes and am looking for some advice on what I should do. I’m thinking of taking the tram to Murren and doing the Northface Trail loop, then potentially hiking down to Gimmelwald and Stechelberg, taking the bus back to Lauterbrunnen. I haven’t been able to find much information on the conditions of these trails during the early winter. Is it realistic to do these trails in mid-December, particularly the Northface Trail? Would you recommend anything different? I’ve only got 1 day, I’m trying to find the most scenic and enjoyable option. Other thought was to maybe take the tram up to Wengen from Lauterbrunnen and do one of the many trails on that side. Thanks in advance for any input.

    Scott

If the paths you want to use are oficially open as year round or ‘winter walking paths, they should be open – there will either be no snow in which case you can walk them as if it was summer. If there has been a snowfall they may have been prepared as winter hiking routes (with snow suitably levelled or cleared. This information may eb available locally on arrival at Lauterbrunnen station

    Hi Scott, welcome to MySwissAlps!

Mid-December is kind of an in-between season (https://www.myswissalps.com/besttimetovisit/winter). As 1960man explains it depends on snowfall whether routes are open as summer routes, groomed as winter trails (https://www.myswissalps.com/hiking/winter) or maybe not accessible at all yet.

The locals at the railway station and the Lauterbrunnen tourism office will be able to provide you with up-to-date info once you get there. This overview may be helpful too: https://jungfrauregion.swiss/en/winter/planning-and-events/mountain-railways/status-facility-hiking-trails/. It shows which mountain railways, restaurants and hikes are open at the moment. You could consult it shortly before leaving.
