A traveler named NaiffromBrazil is looking for the best way to travel from Milan to Grindelwald on March 25. They want to know if the Swiss Travel Pass can be used for this journey. The suggested route is via the Gotthard line, which is scenic and involves only two train changes.
Key takeaways:
Use the Gotthard line for a more efficient and scenic route from Milan to Grindelwald.
If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, you'll need to buy a ticket from Milan to Chiasso.
Remember to make a seat reservation for the Eurocity train from Milan to Lucerne.

HI NaiffromBrazil,
Welcome to MySwissAlps.
The fastest route would be to go via Lugano and Lucerne, about 5.5 hours journey. However this connection includes changing trains 3 times. You can use the Swiss timetable (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/) to look up for suitable connections.

Hello NailfromBrazil
There are two possible routes from Milan to the Berner Oberland region, in which Grindelwald is situated not far from Interlaken.
The two routes are the SIMPLON line via Domodossola, Brig, and Spiez; The GOTTHARD line via Chiasso, Lugano and Lucerne.
I would unhesitatingly recommend the GOTTHARD route. There are three reasons.
Firstly, it appears that throughout 2025 Italian railways are doing a lot of engineering work on the Simpon line; train services will be disrupted.
Secondly, as Anna says, you will need a ticket from Milan to the Swiss border. On the Simplon line the border station is Domodossola, 125 kilometres from Milan. On the Gotthard line the border station is Chiasso, 51 kms. from Milan. So your Italian ticket is going to be a lot cheaper..
Thirdly, the line from Lucerne to Interlaken Ost (where you change for the local train to Grindelwald) is very scenic.
There is a Eurocity train leaving Milano Centrale at 10 10 bound for Basel via Lucerne. This train gets to Lucerne at 13 41. The Lucerne-Interlaken express leaves at 14 06, arrives Interlaken Ost 15 54. There are local trains every 30 minutes Interlaken to Grindelwald.
In brief, if you take the 10 10 Eurocity from Milan you will have only two changes. As you have a Swiss Travel Pass, you will need a Milano-Chiasso ticket. As the train is a Eurocity, you will need a seat reservation Milan to Lucerne.
Best wishes
Roger
