Hello,

We are planning to visit Geneva & Montreux in May 2024 & am planning a visit to Lavaux Vineyards while staying in Montreux. I need a little help in planning this visit:

1) What is the best way to get to Lavaux Vineyards from Montreux?

2) If train, which station do we get out at?

3) Once we get out, is it easy to navigate or walk to the Vineyards?

4) What would be the best way to tour the Vineyards since it is a big area? (we are 2 adults at moderate fitness level).

4) On the Lavaux Express website, there are different ride options including the Cully Loop and Lutry Loop. Which is the best option if coming from and returning to Montreux?

5) Do we need to get tickets for the Lavaux Express in advance?

Would appreciate any recommendations/suggestions/options also.

Very welcome to MySwissAlps.

Thanks for sharing your plans. In answer to your questions:

1. You can reach the Lavaux vineyards from Montreux by train.  There are various access points, Rivaz or Cully are popular choices as is St.Saphorin depending which vineyards are wanting to visit. All require a short walk to the vineyards, not a bad thing as on a clear day, you’ll witness some lovely views of the lake.  You can research the train journeys via the Swiss timetable: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/
2. Should you wish to explore the vineyards on foot, have a read of the attached link for details:  https://www.myswissalps.com/blog/hike-lutry-epesses/
3. There is 5 minutes difference in travel times for Lutry and Cully to Montreux.  Just opt with what works best with your schedule.
4. I would reserve a seat if you wish to guarantee a seat on the Lavaux Express.

One last question on this:

-Once we get off of the train, how do we figure out which way to go? Is it well marked, do we ask someone, or are maps available there?

Hi Susan,

The train stations along the vineyards are fairly small and the paths leading to the vineyards and town centres are well marked. You might want to get maps beforehand from the rail office in Montreux.

The yellow lines are hiking trails. You can zoom in to whatever railway station or bus stop you intend to get out at to see the finer details (see sample screenshot).

I have linked to the aerial view, as the hiking routes show up better, but you can change the background to a topographical map via the “Background” link in the lower right of the screen.

As for directional signs, I have attached some photos showing some examples of the variety of signs you can see along the way to guide you.

There’s a scenic bus route (#382) that travels through part of the Lavaux too, between the railway stations of Cully and Palézieux. You can see a bit of footage showing the scenery en route here:
