Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Jungfraujoch from Grindelwald in early September and is looking for the most scenic route options. They are considering multiple routes and want advice on how to maximize their sightseeing. The traveler is particularly interested in whether to include Lauterbrunnen in their itinerary or skip it for a different path.

Key takeaways:
  • Take the cogwheel train from Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg and change to the Jungfraubahn for a scenic and convenient route to Jungfraujoch.
  • Consider combining the train trip with a gondola ride from Grindelwald to Männlichen for added views.
  • If you're feeling adventurous, hike from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg instead of taking the train.

    Hello,

I believe I’ve seen this question posted on this forum previously, but perhaps it can be revisited.

We’ll be based in Grindelwald in early September. What would be the most scenic direction to travel on the journey to and from Jungfraujoch?

    Our options appear to be:

Grindelwald to Lauterbrunnen – Wengen – Kleine Scheidegg and return Kelrin Scheidegg to Grindelwald, or that trip in reverse

Grindelwald to Mannlichen via cable car. Männlichen to Wengen, skipping Lauterbrunnen, then on to Kleine Scheidegg and then choose a return path.

    Any thoughts?

    Thank You

    Hi Are2,

I think all the routes you mentioned are scenic. If you are based in Grindelwald, obviously the most common and practical way to Jungfraujoch is to take the cogwheel train to Kleine Scheidegg and change to the Jungfraubahn there. Then once you are done at the top, take the train down via Wengen to make it a complete round trip. This route is explained in detail here: http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch/gettingthere

But if you have more time and want to do a bit more sightseeing (rather than just sit in a train), combining the train trip with the gondola ride from Grindelwald to Männlichen and Männlichen to Wengen is a great idea. And if you feel strong enough, you could even hike the trail down from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg and continue your journey to Jungfraujoch by train.

Be sure to use the SBB timetable to plan your journey – http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable !

    Regards,

    Anna

Good tips from Anna! I agree that all routes are scenic. The one via Männlichen is more scenic than the one in the valley via Zweilütschinen. It would make sense to skip Lauterbrunnen if you travel via Männlichen, but I assume you will be taking other day trips too? You can see Lauterbrunnen, and optionally travel via Wengen again, if you visit the Schilthorn on another day: http://www.myswissalps.com/schilthorn.
