Switzerland cross-country mtn bike options in May?

Short summary – read this first

Lexi is planning a 3-4 day trip to Switzerland in the second week of May, looking for open cross-country biking trails. She hasn't booked accommodation yet and seeks advice on the best riding spots during this time.

Key takeaways:
  • Focus on trails below 1500 meters altitude for better chances of being open in mid-May.
  • Check ski resorts like Zermatt for mountain biking opportunities, but be aware that many trails might still be closed in May.
  • Consider cycling trails in areas like Brambüesch near Chur, as they were available in the summer, indicating potential for late spring biking.

    Hi

We have 3-4 days in 2nd week of May in Switzerland where we were hoping to hit some cross country tracks and need some advice on which tracks are open at this time of year. We haven’t booked any accommodation until we work out the best riding.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers Lexi

    Hi Lexi,

I’m not familiar with cross-country mountain biking in Switzerland unfortunately.

Typically speaking, the lower the altitude the better chances of the trails being open in mid-May. Say 1500 meters and below.

Here are a few links to help you find trails in Switzerland to get you started:

There is plenty of mountain biking at ski resorts like Zermatt – long trails once you take a gondola up the mountain (doesn’t have to be all downhill) but the altitude would probably mean most/all are closed still in mid-May.

    Hi Lexi

When we were staying in St. Moritz last summer we did a trip up Brambüesch from Chur and there were a lot of cycling trails up there. I don’t know anything about when they are open as we were there in July but it might be worth checking out.
