A traveler is planning a visit to Lucerne in late June and has 4-5 hours for an afternoon excursion to Mt Rigi. They have Swiss Travel Passes and need advice on the most scenic routes to take up and down the mountain.
Key takeaways:
Consider taking the route from Luzern to Arth-Goldau to Rigi Kulm, then down to Rigi Kaltbad and Weggis for a varied experience.
With a Swiss Travel Pass, all transport to Mt Rigi is free, including the boat and cogwheel train.
Try to catch the 12:00 ship from Luzern to enjoy a lovely lunch on board during your ride.

We will be in Lucerne late June and will have 4-5 hours in the afternoon for an excursion. We will have Swiss travel passes and are considering going to Mt Rigi. I’ve noticed there are numerous ways to do this trip and would like some advice so as to get the most scenic and interesting route to go up and down. Thanks for you input.
Yes, I am also interested in going to Mt Rigi by train . My husband is not fond of boats. We like half day excursions and a chance to visit museums and the sights in town. Any suggestions for eating at restaurants off the beaten path. I hope to see the Saturday morning marketplace Before the crowd arrives. Looking forward to seeing Luzern May 16-19.
More varied rather than two boat trips. Just a personal choice. I don’t think it makes a great difference one way or the other. Everywhere in Switzerland is great.
Took a ship to Vitznau from Luzern and then a coggle train to Rigi. In all it takes about 90 mins. On both the ship and train you get 50% discount on the prices if you have a Swiss pass or Eurail pass.
If you can get the 12:00 hrs ship, then they serve nice Lunch too.
Though it was cloudy but was nice and very chilly at Rigi.
Surprised to find a cosy restaurant at Rigi. Since we could not see much due to the fog and clouds 🤐 so had a cup of hot coffee and noodles.
Surely you will enjoy the scenic and beautiful boat ride as well.
If you had a Eurail Pass then your discount was correct but you said Swiss Pass (which I interpreted as Swiss Travel Pass) was also only 50% discount. I was just correcting in case your comment mislead someone. 😎
Of the beaten path might include Arth am See. It is the village down the hill from Arth Goldau railway junction and might be less touristy than places on Vierwaldstättersee (Lake Luzern) as it is on the smaller Zugersee (Lake Zug)
