Mt. Rigi round trip options with cable car

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Mt. Rigi next week, focusing on various transportation options for their excursion. They want to know whether to choose the 'Majestic Round Trip' or other routes, and seek advice on the best return method from Rigi Kulm, as well as potential walking options in case of bad weather. They also ask about the Gotthard Express's scenery in relation to the return journey.

Key takeaways:
  • Choose the 'Majestic Round Trip' via Arth-Goldau for a more scenic return journey.
  • The cable car from Weggis to Rigi Kaltbad requires a short walk, so plan accordingly for weather.
  • Riding the Gotthard Panorama Express will not duplicate the scenery from Arth-Goldau to Luzern.

We will be in Luzern next week and have pretty much narrowed down our Mt. Rigi trip to Saturday afternoon. I really wanted to include the various modes of transportation on this excursion so am planning to take the boat to Vitznau and Cogwheel train to Rigi Kulm and would like to include aerial on the return.

I see both of your suggested options–“Classic Round Trip” via Weggis, and “Majestic Round Trip” via Arth-Goldau. I am leaning toward the Majestic to avoid taking the boat back the way we came, but had also read somewhere there is an aerial that would connect from one point on Mt. Rigi to a cogwheel to Arth-Goldau. I believe it would involve a cog from Rigi Kulm to another point.

Would someone kindly advise those points?

Also, as we will be traveling via Gotthard Express the next day, is that covering the same scenery as the train route from Arth-Goldau to Luzern? If so, perhaps the return from Rigi Kulm should be based on the most spectacular aerial ride? Thoughts?

And lastly, I read an old thread that mentioned a 20-minute or so walk from the aerial in Weggis to the boat landing. Is that current or is there transportation should we be incur thunderstorms?

    Many thanks!

    Hi DvanJo,

There are a couple cable cars on Rigi but the only one that takes you up and down to the top of Rigi is from Weggis to Rigi Kaltbad (noted on the Classic trip: http://www.myswissalps.com/ri gi)

There is no cable car to Arth-Goldau. You can see the various options on a link to Rigi here: http://www.myswissalps.com/ri gi/gettingthere (under more on other websites). There is a cable car from Kräbel-Rigi Scheidegg but that doesn’t get you up to the top of Rigi.

The Gotthard Panorama Express trip normally has you take the boat from Luzern to Flüelen and then the train on to Lugano: http://www.myswissalps.com/go tthardpanoramaexpress/ gettingthere

So any trains you take from Arth Goldau to Luzern won’t be duplicated (unless you choose to train to Flüelen)

    Hi DvanJo,

There is indeed a cable car from Weggis (to be reached by boat ideally) to Rigi Kaltbad: the black line on the map on the page Lucas referred to. It’s a 10 to 15 minute up-hill walk. I am not aware of transportation between the dock and the cable car station. From Rigi Kaltbad you can continue by train via Rigi Kulm (the top) and to Arth-Goldau.

If you want to extend your trip you could take a 10 minute bus ride from Arth-Goldau to the stop “Arth, Am See”. Then take a 45-60 minute boat ride on Lake Zug to Zug, and a train to Lucerne from there. Do check timetables as there are only a few boats per day.

    Have fun!
