Munich to Lucerne, Interlaken and Zurich in 3 days in July

Short summary – read this first

A traveler from the US is planning a 3-day trip to Switzerland starting from Munich in July. They want advice on their itinerary, particularly if day-1 and day-3 are too tight or if they should skip Lucerne to go directly to Interlaken. Feedback suggests their plan is doable, especially with an emphasis on enjoying Lucerne.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider keeping your stop in Lucerne; it's a beautiful city worth visiting.
  • When traveling from Lucerne to Interlaken, you can easily incorporate a boat trip on Lake Brienz by timing your train connections.
  • Make sure to check the local train and boat schedules to avoid tight connections on your trip.

    Hi,

We are from the US, and will be traveling to Switzerland from Munich in July. If I have 3 days, what would be your guidance? My tentative plan is as below:

Day-1 : Start from Munich early morning (6:54 AM train) to Zurich and Zurich to Lucerne – Arrive in Lucerne around 12 or 12:30 PM.

Drop luggage, go to Mt-Pilatus in the afternoon. Stay overnight in Lucerne

Day -2 : Start from Lucerne to Interlaken (golden pass scenic route) ; Drop baggage and visit places like Harder Kulm; Lake Brienz boat ride ; Check-in at Interlaken

Day-3 : Check out of Interlaken hotel and drop baggage at hotel ; Early morning visit to Jungfraujoch ; Return by 3 PM and head to Zurich ; Check-in at Zurich hotel

Day-4 : Fly back to the US

Is this an appropriate plan? I am concerned about day-1 and 3 and wonder if it is too tight. Should I skip Lucerne and head to Interlaken directly? Appreciate your feedback

    Hi Antman,

    >>> Day -2 : Start from Lucerne to Interlaken (golden pass scenic route) ; Drop baggage and visit places like Harder Kulm; Lake Brienz boat ride ; Check-in at Interlaken

You could incorporate your boat trip on Lake Brienz (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/boat-lake-brienz/) on the way from Luzern to Interlaken. Boats leave Brienz for Interlaken Ost at 10:40, 12:40, 14:40, 15:40 and 17:40, so you could choose a train that will get you to Brienz in time to connect to one of those boats. It is an easy level transfer between boat and train at both Brienz and Interlaken Ost, with the boat docks being adjacent to the railway stations.

    >>> Should I skip Lucerne and head to Interlaken directly?

No, I wouldn’t skip Luzern. It is a beautiful city, and an afternoon and night there would be well spent I think.

    Hope this helps!
