Berner Oberland closures: another option for Mürren-Allmendhubel?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a 4-day trip to the Lauterbrunnen/Murren area in May, staying in Murren and then Lauterbrunnen. They need alternatives to reach a memorial bench after discovering the Allmendhubel funicular is closed and want to know about a website for checking transport closures in the Bernese Oberland area.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider taking a bus from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg and then hiking to Allmendhubel if the funicular is unavailable.
  • Use the Swiss timetable website to check for closures of trains, cable cars, and other transport in the Bernese Oberland area.
  • The trails may not be fully accessible in May, so check with the local tourist office for current conditions.

I will be spending 4 days in the Lauterbrunnen/Murren area in May. Staying in Murren for the first 3 nights and Lauterbrunnen Valley
that last night, in order to be closer to Interlaken Ost for an early train departure.

I had planned to visit a memorial bench in honor of a friend that is located
5 minutes downhill from the Allmendhubel funicular station towards Sonnenberg. I just discovered that the funicular I planned to take from
Murren to Allmenhubel is going to be closed for maintenance.

What other options are there to get to this location?
My husband has some back issues
that make it difficult for him to hike more than a couple of miles at a time and doing much uphill hiking would be a challenge.

Also, is there a central website that lists all train, cable car, funicular, bus, etc.. closures for the Bernese Oberland area?
I just happen to stumble across the info about the Allmendhubel funicular closure.
It makes me wonder if I might encounter other closures for places I plan to visit along the way.
Makes planning a lot easier if I know about potential roadblocks ahead of time.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Hi RVB,

The below are alternative options if the funicular is not available. However, hiking would be required.  Do bear in mind it could be that the trails are not accessible in May as they normally open around June time.  You can check with the local tourist office to be sure, if you did want to still hike.

    1. Take a bus from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg, followed by a hike to Allmendhubel.
    2. Take the cable car to Mürren, and hike to Allmendhubel.

To research closures, you can use the Swiss timetable.  If there is no result, it’s likely the mode of transport is not running.  Alternatively, go to our activities section and for example, in the mountain trips you’ll find all the major mountain visits listed.  Within each mountain trip, you can find a section explaining all the  “Operation dates, schedules and timetable for 2025”.

    Here is Männlichen for example.

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda
