Murren vs Wengen as base for a 3-day hiking trip in early June

Short summary – read this first

A traveler, Desperate for advice, is planning a trip to Switzerland for the first week of June with hotel reservations in Wengen and Mürren. They're concerned about the access to Mürren via the cable car and wonder if it's too complicated for returning after hiking, and they want opinions on which village is a better base for their short stay.

Key takeaways:
  • The cable car from Stechelberg to Mürren runs regularly, so returning after hiking should be manageable.
  • Wengen is slightly easier to reach from Lauterbrunnen, especially if you're carrying luggage.
  • Both Wengen and Mürren offer great hiking opportunities, so base your choice on your hiking plans.

Desperate for advice…I have two hotel reservations 1) Alpenrose Wengen, 2) Hotel Eiger Murren. Visiting first week of June. However, Eiger informed us the only access to Murren would be the cable car. Does this seem to add unnecessary troubles to return to our hotel nightly after hiking?  3 nights total -also thoughts on Murren vs wengen

    Hi Nitram,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

You can find practical information on how to travel to Mürren here: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-guide/lauterbrunnen-murren/

If the Grutschalp cableway + train is closed for maintenance, you can still reach Mürren via the cable car in Stechelberg (Schilthornbahn). Don’t worry the cable car runs regularly (4 services every hour during the day).

Wengen, on the other hand, is accessible only by cogwheel train, which also runs at regular intervals. You can find further information here: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-guide/lauterbrunnen-wengen/

Both Wengen and Mürren are good base for exploring the Jungfrau region. Which one is better depends on your itinerary. If you are planning to hike in Gimmelwald and Almendhubel, Mürren is actually just perfect!

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Anna

I do not think you can go wrong with either village as a base–they both offer plenty of hiking opportunities and spectacular scenery. As Anna said, it might depend on what hikes you want to do. I would say that for easy access to/from Lauterbrunnen (for example on arrival or departure days with luggage in tow), Wengen might be a bit easier than Mürren, as you would have to take the bus from Lauterbrunnen to the cable car station in Stechelberg and then on to Mürren. We stayed Wengen a few years back and found the direct cogwheel train option from Lauterbrunnen worked very well; departures every 30 minutes, usually plenty of room and beautiful scenery on the 12-minute journey.
