Frankfurt – Interlaken- Sierre – Paris rail pass?

Short summary – read this first

Trixie1911 is planning a family trip to Europe in March, landing in Frankfurt and traveling to Interlaken for an overnight stay. They want to take trains to Sierre and then to Paris, seeking tips on the best travel pass to save money while booking first-class tickets for a comfortable journey.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider using the Swiss Travel Pass for travel within Switzerland, as it may offer savings based on your itinerary.
  • For the train journey from Frankfurt to Interlaken and onward to Paris, point-to-point tickets might be more economical than a three-country pass.
  • Check prices for individual train segments before deciding on any rail pass to ensure you get the best deal.

My family (2 adults, 14 and 11 year old) is traveling to Europe in March. We are landing in Frankfurt Germany on a Thursday and would like to take a train to Interlaken, Switzerland and Stay overnight. We would like to take a train Friday afternoon and go to Sierre, Switzerland. On Monday we would like to leave Sierre by train and go to Paris. We will be flying out of Paris to go home. Our goal is to make this train trips as quickly as possible so we would like to take the speed train if possible. My husband would also like to book first class on all train rides (would like a quieter environment with more room). I’m not sure if we should get a 3 country travel pass (will he have to pay extra for speed trains?), or get some sort of Swiss pass and purchase the speed trains into and out of Switzerland separately. It is very confusing especially since the kids seem to be able to travel for free in Switzerland, but not in other countries.

Hi Trixie1911 and welcome to MySwissAlps!

In order to know which Swiss rail pass (if any) will save you money over buying point to point tickets, you’ll need to first decide on your day to day itinerary and then find ticket prices and compare to rail pass discounts (some trips are fully covered and others partially covered). Read though our instructional page on how to find the best rail pass for your itinerary here: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass (we even have a spreadsheet there to help with the math).

A 3 country pass wouldn’t make any sense if your only trips outside of Switzerland are coming in from Frankfurt and out to Paris.

You can look at buying point to point tickets for them here:

As for Switzerland, a Swiss Travel Pass might make sense: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass but doing the math above will tell you for sure.
