Hi,

My boyfriend and I are planning to take a trip to the Alps sometime this summer, and looking for recommendations/itineraries of a 4-5 day hut-to-hut hiking trip.

We would like to do a good amount of hiking per day and hike to a different hut every night. Please feel free to pass along any resources, websites, or blogs for me to research.

Hi Mo and welcome to MySwissAlps!

We have had quite a few posts on hut to hut hiking over the years – use the search box on the top right to search for “hut” or “hut to hut” to find a few threads with our members answers & links that will help with your plans, such as:

Another couple websites to look at which are Wanderland.ch & schweizmobil.ch which has details on many different long hikes like the Trans Swiss Trail & the Via Gottardo among many others.

I would try and plan your trip in August or September for the best conditions in the higher altitudes.

Hi Mo-

Sounds like fun. My knees don’t permit such hikes, but I certainly envy you.

Some of Lucas’s links might lead here, but this is a useful link:

And, Switzerland Mobility has details on major named hikes, as well as good maps.

I find it hard to use, but, one thing is easy. Focus the map in on a region, and make sure Hiking Trails are visible (click on Wanderland in the home page menu).

Some green lines will be heavier then others.. Click on those, and they will take you to a lot of detailed information, mostly for well known named hikes. I really like the altitude profile, and accommodation infpormation is available.. Lesser trails wills come up with “no further information.”

You can also use the search function to search for location names. Sometimes works for trail, such as the “Via Alpina.”

I use it on a trial and error basis.

Finally, there are a whole lot of good topo maps available in various formats.

The best are made by the Swiss Federation Land Office. They are described under products on the SwissTopo website:

That site also has a very detailed on-line map with many many options. I use it when I want to see fine details:

I turned on hiking trails in the menu. Color coding is the standard convention. Do you know it?

Last question – since this would be our first “hut-to-hut” hiking experience would you recommend doing a guided tour or just planning ahead and going ourselves?

Are you experienced in hiking for long periods in mountains at high altitudes? SWill you be fit and acclimated to altitudes well over a mile high….3000 meters?

Reservations are necessary or very desirable in the busy summer months.

I don’t know for sure if guided tours are available, but I am almost certain that they are. Someone more knowledgeable can surely help.

I don’t have any personal experience on hut to hut hiking but there are some companies that offer guided and self-guided tours…here are a couple (I don’t have experience with them myself)
