No 1st/2nd class seats on GoldenPass Express 92 days ahead?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip on the Golden Pass Express from Interlaken to Montreux and faced issues booking a seat for the 11:08 am train, as all seats were reserved. They want to know if there are any non-reserved seats available and whether Sundays are busier than other days.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider booking in Prestige Class for a more comfortable experience, even if it's slightly more expensive.
  • If you experience issues with the booking website, try clearing your browser cookies or using a different browser.
  • Keep in mind that the Swiss Travel Pass allows you to ride the train without needing a separate ticket, but a reservation is still necessary.

92 days out, which is the earliest date I could reserve a seat, I tried booking a seat on the Golden Pass Express from Interlaken to Montreux on the 11:08 am train. NO seats were available in first or second class!!! There were only 2 cars to choose from (one was first class and one was second class). There were seats on the earlier and later  trains. My question is: are there other seats (in other cars) , just not RESERVED seats on the 11:08? If not, does that mean I stand for 3 1/2 hours?

Also, there was a symbol of 3 dots, 2 of which were green. Does that mean there are 3 cars and two cars  have reserved seats?

This was for a Sunday. Are Sundays busier than other days? I checked earlier days and there was availability for the 11:08.

Hello! Unfortunately it is possible, especially when we talking about GPX departing from Interlaken at 11:08 (most popular train on this route for people starting in Luzern). You should thinking about seat in Prestige Class – it is slightly more expensive, but comfort is higher and every 1 class ticket is valid (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/goldenpass/).

Thank you, Kamil! So, I tried to reserve in Prestige class , and before I even put a date in, there was no option for the “from” and “to” cities. The drop down menu did not work ( it worked for the first and second class reserved seating.  I am attaching a photo of the page. There was an arrow for the drop down – to select cities – but it did not work!!!! Can you advise?

Elle777 – MOB carrier website – in my opinion – technically is the worst swiss’s internet page using to booking 🙁 I had a lot of problems with it, including your problem. But restart of browser (eventually with clear the coockies) always helped 🙂 And don’t use a smartphone – in very much cases there is a irritating bug when you cannot to move screen with seat layout graphic.

Hi Elle777! In addition to Kamil’s helpful info, I suggest you take a look at this thread as well: https://www.myswissalps.com/community/thread/golden-pass-express-seat-reservations/. I just addressed the mobile versus desktop website issue that Kamil raised, as well as explained what the green dots mean.

The drop-down lists to select departure and arrival towns just worked for me. Maybe try again, or in a different browser?

Hello … i had similar problem … try using a different browser … I used safari instead of chrome.  We are doing a day trip from Interlaken to montreaux on the 9th of May … I reserved the last available seats this week.  If your itinerary allows, choose a weekday.  Best of luck.  From memory there are other options to montreaux eg the Belle epoque train.

Thank you Kamil, Annika, and Aldwell!

I cleared all  cookies on Chrome and that did not help.

    I rebooted.

I will have to try a different browser, because I still cannot enter destinations.

Thankfully, this was a “practice”  run but I hope  that next month when I do need to buy the reserved seats that I can do it.  Is MOB the only company which sells seats on the Golden Pass Express? Does SBB sell seats? If I could at least enter the destination info i  could reserve for a different time. It is very frustrating because I don’t want to stand for 3.5 hours.

Elle777 – I thought about your browsers and I’ve another two suggestions – temporary disable any ads blocker you use (ex. Adblock, uMatrix) and your antivirus. In my eyes it’s impossible that you still have a problems – 3 days ago I bought without any problems reservation for GoldenPass Belle Epoque…

Hi Elle — I found that on the Golden Pass Express site, if the page was automatically translated by my browser, the stations didn’t appear in the drop down menu. If you’re not already, make sure that you’re choosing a language from the menu on the home screen and not just letting your browser translate for you, and that might help. That did the trick for me. Good luck!

Interesting! Thank you, Karen !! I  THINK that for some reason my browser might have translated ( other times it was the web  site translation ).  I will try that! I have been practicing and will not be eligible to make the reservation for a few weeks. It will be a disappointment if I cannot use the site to make a seat reservation. My back up plan is to call!

Elle777, now I remember – like a Karen I had a problem with “Glacier Express” website’s auto-translate. When I used in browser the option “Never translate this website” everything came allright.

Sooo, the  drop down menu for cities worked but only for first and second class. Since those classes were sold out, I thought I would try prestige class. However, prestige class defaulted to browser translation. I tried many times and the site went to “IN” language for prestige and I could not select cities.  This is so strange.

Elle777 – now I’m sure that your website with Prestige Class is still translated, because normally there is no language called “IN”. You must “un-translated” this website separately.

I had been selecting English at the website and it worked for 1st and 2nd class seat reservations….but the default for Prestige tickets was for the browser translation (even though I had selected english on the website.

HOWEVER, somehow, after several tries, I was able to eliminate the browser translation AND get the drop down destination menu for prestige ! Hooray! Now I hope it will work going forward…this was a trial run! Thank you all for you help! Whew! It should not be this complicated!!

Elle777, are you after a Prestige reservation or 1st/2nd?  The reason that I ask is that you can already book Prestige seats.

We are travelling Interlaken to Montreux on the 11:08am train on 11th October and I booked my reservations well before Christmas.  There were already a few seats sold then, so I wouldn’t delay if you want Prestige.

    Hi DebH!

I prefer 2nd class, but since 1st and 2nd were sold out, I was trying to buy anything… thus Prrstige.

BTW, lead out time  for purchasing  seat reservations is now 92 days. I think it was changed recently.

Prestige was limit at 60 days today and as I practiced buying I still could not get it to work for April 4. 15. 21, 24, 25, and 26. But 1st and second was working fine.  The thing I never found is where it says to put in discount that you have a Swiss Travel Pass  Never found that area.

(the reason why I am practicing is that while I was doing Glacier the seats got taken right out from under me)

    Hi DelrayDancer,

The price of the seat reservation on the GoldenPass Express including the Prestige seats are fixed. There are no discounts for Swiss Travel Pass holders. However with a Swiss Travel Pass, you don’t need a ticket to ride the train. The Swiss Travel Pass is your ticket.

DelrayDancer, you are confusing terms – 60 days is a period, when you can buying a TICKET for “Golden Pass Express” in any class (1st, 2nd or Prestige). As Anna said you don’t need any ticket (of course if your pass is relevent for choosen travel class). You must make a reservation only (in case of Prestige Class you can do it 180 days ahead).
