Oeschinensee panorama hike in May

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Jungfrau from May 25-29 and will stay in Lauterbrunnen. They want to know if the Oeschinensee panoramic trail will be open during their visit to decide if a day trip is worthwhile. They seek advice on the trail's accessibility in late May.

Key takeaways:
  • The Oeschinensee panoramic trail may be closed at the end of May, so check local snow conditions before planning your trip.
  • Consider exploring alternative hiking spots around Kandersteg and other nearby lakes like Blausee and Gasterntal, which are usually accessible in late May.
  • The cable car to Oeschinensee typically starts operating in mid-May, so keep an eye on local updates for exact timings.

Hello! I am traveling to Jungfrau at the end of May (May25-29) and will be based in Lauterbrunnen. Is the Oeschinensee panoramic trail usually open by this time? I am considering a day trip with my wife, but I am not sure it will be worth the travel unless the trail is open. Thanks in advance!

It may be a bit early, but opening is decided locally based on the prevailing conditions. It may not be possible to know in advance. There are walks around Kandersteg in the valley that are very pleasant and will be passable in late May so your trip would not be a waste of time.

I also think that it is a bit too early to walk the Panorama Trail of Oeschinensee lake. Of course, it also depends on the amount of snow that has fallen in winter. In addition to Lake Oeschninen, there is also the beautiful Blausee lake near Kandersteg, as well as Sunnbüel with Arvenseeli and Daubensee, and the wild Gasterntal valley to hike.

    Hi Jnb0108,

I’ve visited Oeschinensee in May. The cable car usually starts operating in mid May for the summer season. I’m not sure if the panorama trail would be accessible in May though. It all depends on the weather around that time. You can check the website for current updates: http://www.oeschinensee.ch/en/sommer/
