Just buy the ticket on the day you decide the weather looks good. You have to go to the ticket office at Kriens or Alpnachstad anyway to get a free ticket with your Swiss Travel Pass.

Does this requirement to line up to get a free ticket at the Pilatus ticket office (using your Swiss Travel Pass) apply to the Schilthornbahn or the Seilbahn cable car to Grutschalp? I read in another post here that someone tried to get on the Schilthornbahn in Murren with a Swiss Travel Pass and was unaware they needed a free ticket also.
Is it possible to get the required Pilatus free ticket in advance in Luzern at the Tourist Information Office near the Luzern HB train station.. I am trying to avoid getting caught in lines if possible and wish to avoid any mistakes due to being a first time traveler to these locations. I will be traveling the third week of June. Thank you very much for any help on this matter.

Hello Rhalloran and Welcome to MySwissAlps,
For Schilthorn yes, for Grütschalp no (based on my experience).
The “ticket” you get at both Schilthorn and Pilatus has a magnetic stripe which controls which access routes you can access based on the fare you pay. You use it to go up and down via Kriens of Alpnachstad. I don’t think you can get the mag stripe ticket in Luzern but I’m not 100% sure. See http://www.myswissalps.com/pi latus/tickets.
For Schilthorn you can make an advance booking for a specific departure time. See http://www.myswissalps.com/sc hilthorn/tickets.

Thank you very much for the reply. My wife and I will be using a Swiss Travel Pass and were pleased to learn that we will be able to simply board trains without standing in ticket lines or using ticket kiosks. We were also pleased to see how many cable cars, boats and cogwheel trains were included with the Swiss Travel Pass. We were caught off guard to learn we might accidentally stand in a long line to get on the cog train at Pilatus and in fact have to leave it and get in another line to get the magnetic stripe ticket which is free due to having a Swiss Travel Pass. Your help is greatly appreciated.
