Our 6-day Switzerland visit from Lucerne in September
-
It is said that if there is heaven on Earth, it is Switzerland. When one thinks about it, one realizes that it is not only the natural beauty that Switzerland encompasses but the bouquet of services and facilities that it provides through transportation, hotels, tourism passes, helpful authorities and more, that makes it a paradise. We have visited Switzerland seven times before and it pulled us with its magic, the eighth time, this year in September, even though we had experienced the beauty of Christmas markets just last winter.
Our old age and shaky knees do not allow us to be adventurous any more so we planned a relaxed trip this time, making Lucerne as the centre of our six day tour, covering Lake Oeschinnen, Lavaux- Oron, Meiringen, Willigen Klinik Reichenbach, Rigi Kulm, Stoos, Locarno and Ascona. We had booked our stay at an apartment in HORW, Lucerne. The apartment, as expected, was perfectly cosy and comfortable.
The cruise on lake Lucerne is extremely popular with tourists and this time we took a 4 hours long haul cruise in Lake lucerne, covering Weggis, Vitznau, Beckenried, Uri Village, Fluelen and Stanstadd and enjoyed a lovely coffee and some crisp French fries on board. Our 8 day Swiss Travel Pass allowed us a free ride on this magical boat cruise. We also visited the Lion Monument, Chapel Bridge and the water tower in Lucerne, changing trams or buses comfortably and easily, thanks to our Swiss pass as well as the timely public transport service in the city – just like every other city or town in Switzerland.
We took a morning train to Lutry from Lucerne, passing through towns and villages of Switzerland and at Lutry we bought tickets on the Lavaux Express tourist train, enjoying the extremely beautiful terraced vineyards of the Lavaux wine region as the toy train took us on a hour and a half ride through fields of green with mountains and lake Geneva providing a perfect backdrop.
We went by boat to Vitznau from where we went up to Rigi Kulm by cogwheel rail. The views were strikingly beautiful and we discovered a small souvenir shop up there. We came down to Arth Goldau from Rigi Kulm and then took a bus to Schwyz. The Stoosbahnen funicular took us to Stoos. This funicular ride was amazing on the steepest funicular ride in the world but we never felt any discomfort since we were horizontal through the whole ride.
We took trains to visit Locarno and Ascona – the beautiful twin towns by the lake Maggiore. The piers and colorful buildings with the crystal clear waters of the lake and green hills as backdrop are achingly beautiful. We took the toy train rides in both the towns to enjoy the town without too much walking.
We visited the beautiful and quite locales of Lake Oeschinen. We took a train from Lucerne to Kandersteg and from their a bus to the Gondola station. Th Gondola took us to the top of Oeschinensee Mountain. After enjoying the mesmerizing views from the top, we took an electric bus down to the lake stop to enjoy the lake up close.
We also went to see the 7 stage Reichenbach waterfall, which is the spot where Arthur Conan Doyle wrote the “Final Problem” in which the evil Professor Moriarty pushes Sherlock Holmes to his death. We took a train from Lucerne to Meiringen and then a 24-seater wooden funicular to Reichenbach. The views of the waterfall and surrounding valley were spectacular.
