My outdoor activity options in the Jungfrau Region during mid April?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named KMR is planning a week-long trip to Switzerland from Italy in mid-April, focusing on outdoor activities in the Grindelwald/Jungfrau region and visiting Lucerne and Bern. They are seeking advice on whether it’s feasible to enjoy these activities during that time, especially regarding skiing and hiking options.

Key takeaways:
  • The ski season in the Jungfrau region runs until mid-April, so skiing is a great option for outdoor activities.
  • The cable car to Grindelwald First operates throughout April, but adventure activities like First Glider and First Flyer start in May.
  • Hiking to Bachalpsee may be difficult due to snow; check for trail conditions before planning your visit.
  • For food tastings, consider stopping at Gruyères or Montreux as they both offer culinary experiences.
  • Research available activities in Bern and other cities to make the most of your trip.

We will be heading to Switzerland from Italy mid April for about a week. Thinking of visiting Lucerne, Grindelwald First, Bern and leaving out Geneva. Is it wishful thinking to spend most of our time doing outdoor activities in Grindelwald/Jungfrau region in mid April? My thoughts were over night in Lucerne then head to Grindelwald for 2-3 days. After, go to Bern or just head down toward Geneva. We like to do food tastings.  Thinking of visiting Gruyeres or Montreux on the way.  We have not booked anything yet. Want to know best options during this time of year.  Thanks

    Hi KMR,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Thanks for sharing your travel plans.  In regard to outdoor activities, were there particular ones you had in mind?  If you were wanting to ski, the ski season this year, parts of the Jungfrau region (https://www.myswissalps.com/region/jungfrau-region/) is open till late April, so some of the winter trails should be accessible too if you were also thinking of some hiking.

    Mountain top destinations such as
Schilthorn and Jungfraujoch would be accessible. More details on both here:

Bern, Geneva, Gruyères and Montreux are all lovely places to visit. You can search for their guides on this site via the search box.  Perhaps take a read of each and see if one or the other appeals more. You’ll definitely find options for things to do when you are here 🙂

If you are interested in culinary activities, ideas can be researched in the link below:

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda

The activities in the Jungfrau area that interest us include first glider, first flyer, first cliff walk and the Bachalpsee hike. What is the likelihood that these activities will be doable? Do you have an opinion as to which ones would be “must do” and which ones we can skip? Thanks so much

    Hi KMR,

The cable car to Grindelwald First (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/grindelwald-first/) is running throughout April. The adventure activities such as the First Glider and First Flyer are available from 1 May. The hiking trail to Bachalpsee might still have snow on the ground and won’t be accessible. The ski season in the Jungfrau region lasts until mid-April so activities are limited to winter sports.

    Regards,
    Anna
