Ticket options for Zurich – Lucerne and excursion to Stanserhorn

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Rosie is planning a short trip with her 11-year-old grandson, traveling from Zurich Airport to Lucerne and then taking a rail trip to Stanserhorn the next day. She is looking for advice on whether to buy point-to-point tickets for the rail journey or sign up for a travel pass, especially regarding free travel for kids.

Key takeaways:
  • For trips less than 3 days, consider point-to-point tickets instead of a travel pass.
  • Purchase a Children Co-Travelcard for CHF30 to allow your grandson to travel free when with an adult holding a valid ticket.
  • If your trip involves more travel within Switzerland for three or more days, look into getting a Swiss Travel Pass for better savings.

Travelling….myself and child age 11( grandson) Zurich airport to Lucerne & next day return (rail) Rail to Stans plus Cabrio car up to Stanserhorn and back to Lucerne.
Pay as we go tickets? Sign up for pass? Free travel for kids is only with an actual parent it seems?

    Dear Rosie,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

For a trip less than 3 days, it might be more sensible getting a point-to-point ticket (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/regular-ticket/) to travel from Zurich to Lucerne. For the excursion to Stanserhorn, I suggest getting a Saver Day Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/saver-day-pass/).

If you are travelling with your grandson, you can purchase a Children Co-Travelcard (CHF30). A child (6-16 years) with a Children’s Co-Travelcard Pass doesn’t have to pay for travel when travelling with an adult who holds a valid ticket.  You can purchase the travelcard from any staffed SBB railway station.

You can find further information about Stanserhorn here: https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/stanserhorn/

    Regards,
    Anna

    Hello Rosie.

Subject to the points I am about to make, I would strongly agree with Anna’s advice.

I am wondering what are you planning to do when you return to Lucerne from the Stanserhorn.  There will be at least one more journey within Switzerland, even if it is only a ride back to Zurich Airport.

If you are doing significantly more travelling in Switzerland than what you outline in your thread, and it covers three or more days, then it may be worth investing in a Swiss Travel Pass.

(Also note the Swiss Half fare Card, but that Card costs 120 CHF)

    Kind regards
    Roger

Thank you Roger, we will be heading back to airport on our second day after Stanserhorn trip. Our first day will be spent exploring Lucerne. Whirlwind trip this time!
