A traveler is planning a 2-night stay in Lucerne and wants to take the Mt. Pilatus Golden Round Trip. They’re seeking advice on how long the journey takes and what transportation is included with the Swiss Travel Pass.
Key takeaways:
The Mt. Pilatus Golden Round Trip can be done in a half day to a full day, depending on the time spent at the top.
The Swiss Travel Pass covers free travel to/from Alpnachstad, Lucerne, and Kriens, with 50% off the cable car and cogwheel train to Pilatus.

Hello, I plan to stay in Lucerne for 2 nights, and would like to take a day to do the Mt. Pilatus / Golden Round Trip. How long does it take to complete this journey, and also what transportation are covered by the Swiss Travel Pass? Thank you.
A description of the Mt PIlatus Golden Round trip is available here: http://www.myswissalps.com/pilatus (scroll down to the ‘Golden Round Trip’ section). This trip starts and ends at the Lucerne train station – both the bus station and the boat terminal are located near the train station. It involves taking the boat from Lucerne to Alpnachstad (abt 1.5 hour), cogwheel train from Alpnachstad to Pilatus (35 mins), cable car from Pilatus to Kriens (35 mins) and finally Kriens to Lucerne train station (20 mins). You can start the trip from any direction but I personally would go with the bus and cable car first and enjoy the boat ride at the end of the trip. Depending on how much time you wish to spend at the top of Pilatus, this could either be a half day or one day excursion. Please use the SBB timetable to look up train/ boat schedules and plan your journey.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Anna

We would like to do the Golden Round Trip from Luzern to Alpnachstad by boat, the cog wheel train to Mt. Pilatus, then the cable car and gondola to Kriens and then bus back to Luzern. We have Eurail passes. Which parts of the trip are free and/or discounted? We plan to travel on July 4. Do I need to buy tickets in advance because of crowds? If so, how do I get the discounts? If I don’t buy tickets in advance, do I just show up at the dock and train stations and show my Eurail pass, pay a discount if applicable, and hope there is room?
If you have further questions about your travel plans, you can best post them in a new thread as this one’s about Pilatus tickets with the Swiss Travel Pass. Thanks for your understanding :-)!
Thanks for your response. And sorry about the thread mix-up. As you noticed, I’m new to this community, and it’s actually my first time joining a forum like this. Thanks again.
