Plan for itinerary in Zermatt from Geneva

Short summary – read this first

Glinda is planning a short trip to Zermatt with two friends after attending a conference in Geneva. They will be traveling on May 13 and 14, with plans to visit the Matterhorn and need advice on the best travel passes and activities during their stay. She wants to make the most of her time before flying back to the Philippines on the 15th.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider buying the Swiss Half Fare Card instead of the Swiss Transfer Ticket, as it may save you more on rail fares and can be used for the Gornergrat and Klein Matterhorn.
  • Matterhorn Glacier Paradise will be open in May, so you can include that visit in your itinerary.
  • Utilize the Swiss Train Timetable to find train connections and costs for your travel plans.
  • Plan all the trips you will make to see if a rail pass is more economical than individual tickets.

    Hello Swiss Alps,

I need help to plan my itinerary for Zermatt. I will be in Geneva for a conference after which by May 13 and 14 will be free before heading home for the Philippines on the 15th. I’ll be travelling with 2 friends. Here’s my plan.

1.Take the train from Geneva to Zermatt 13May 8:12 with train change in Visp ,arriving in Zermatt at 11:51. Is it worth to buy the Swiss transfer ticket since my stay is less than 3 days?

    2. I’ll spend half of 13 whole day of 14, visit the Matterhorn thru Gornergat railway and Glacial Paradise but not sure if its closed for maintenance in May. What other things to do for this short visit? I want to make the most of this visit.

    3. Planning to return to Geneva on the 14th late afternoon or early on the 15th so as not to miss my return flight @15:00.

Thanks so much for your help

    Glinda

Hi Glinda and welcome to MySwissAlps,

    1. Would save around CHF 40 on round trip fares using the Swiss Transfer Ticket. But a Swiss Half Fare Card might save you a bit more as you can use it on Gornergrat and Klein Matterhorn (Matterhorn Glacier Paradise). You’d have to crunch the numbers.

    2. Enjoy the atmosphere. 😎

    3. You could return to Montreux on14th and have a look around there. You would be within easy reach of the airport from there.

Forgot to mention Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is open and you can use the Swiss Train Timetable (http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable) to work out the fares for any trip. When you go to buy a ticket the fare you see on the right hand side of the page will normally be the half-fare price. Double it to get full fare.

    Hi Glinda,

To know which pass is the best for your specific itinerary you need to plan out all trips you will make (train, bus, boat, cable car) and compare the prices for regular tickets to the rail pass price (and which routes/mountains are free or discounted). Once you have that information you can read our page here on how to choose the best rail pass. There is a spreadsheet there to help with the math. 🙂

Even with a short trip it is possible the Swiss Half Fare Card vs. just the Swiss Transfer Ticket could be worth it for you – no way to know until you know all the trips you’ll make
