Play in snow near Zürich late February

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is looking for a place near Zurich where their child can play in the snow. They have a car but prefer not to pay for expensive cable cars, as they found no snow in Engelberg. They're hoping to find a location where they can experience snow without the need for lifts.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider driving to Davos, but be aware it's about a 2-hour drive.
  • Closer to Zurich, places like Rigi, Flumserberg, Hoch Ybrig, and Pizol are around an hour away, but snow conditions can vary.
  • Check online live cams or weather reports for current snow conditions before heading out.
  • With this winter being warm, snow may be limited even at higher altitudes.

Hello, I would like to know if there is any town where my child can play in snow at this time near zürich. I have a car and would not like to pay for a expensive cable car or something. We really just want to feel the snow. We have been to Engelberg but there is no snow there on the base of the mountain.

In Portugal you can go to the top of the mountain (“Serra da Estrela”) with a car, is there something similar here?

    Hi Newtonc,

You can try Davos but that’s 2 hours drive away. You can check the live cam here: http://www.davos.ch/en/davos-klosters/news/live-cams/livecams-davos-klosters/

This has been the warmest winter so far. Closer to Zurich, it’s close to impossible to find snow without taking a cable car or lifts up the mountains. I can think of Rigi, Flumserberg, Hoch Ybrig and Pizol. These are all accessible within 1 hour from Zurich.

Really? Even at the top? I would expect at this time of the year, it would be covered with snow.
