Public transportation in Switzerland using Eurail

Short summary – read this first

Hari, a traveler from Sweden, is planning a trip to Switzerland for 5 days before heading to Italy for 4 days. They are unsure whether to choose a Eurail Pass or a Swiss Travel Pass, especially for local transportation during their stay in Switzerland.

Key takeaways:
  • Plan your itinerary carefully and compare regular ticket prices with the rail pass prices.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass provides better discounts and coverage for public transport compared to the Eurail Pass.
  • Non-European residents cannot use the Eurail Pass, so consider the Swiss Travel Pass or the Interrail Pass instead.

    Hi,

I am a resident of Sweden made travel plans to visit Switzerland for 5 days and then would travel to Italy for another 4 days.

I am confused in selecting the right pass.Should it be eurail pass or Swiss travel pass( not sure how to buy the pass for 5th day in Switzerland). The other doubt is can a eurail pass be used for public transportation in Switzerland (Public transporation I mean trams, buses, boats) or should I have to buy point to point tickets? Any inputs on this is highly appreciated.

    Regards,

    Hari

Hi Hari and welcome to MySwissAlps!

To know which pass is the best for your specific itinerary you need to plan out all trips you will make (train, bus, boat, cable car) and compare the prices for regular tickets to the rail pass price (and which routes/mountains are free or discounted). Once you have that information you can read our page here on how to choose the best rail pass. There is a spreadsheet there to help with the math. 🙂

You can see what is and isn’t included on the Eurail Pass here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/eurailselectpass /validity

The Swiss Travel Pass offers much better discounts in Switzerland with better coverage (including public transit) then the Eurail Pass. Unless you are making several or more train trips in Italy I would go with the Swiss Travel Pass.

The extra ‘5th’ day promotion isn’t offered to Swedish residents at this time. You can also look at the Interrail Switzerland Pass https://www.myswissalp s.com/interrailswitzer landpass

    Hi Hari,

Eurail can only be used by non-European residents. In your case Interrail would work, or the Swiss Travel Pass.

    Hi Lucas,

Thanks for the response. I will go through the links mentioned by you in calculating the transportation costs.
