Questions about the GoldenPass trains

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Starj1959 is looking to understand the advantages of taking the GoldenPass train from Interlaken to Montreux. They want to know if it follows the same route as regular trains, the pricing, and whether it’s included with a Swiss Travel Pass or discounted with a Swiss Half Fare Pass.

Key takeaways:
  • The GoldenPass train and regular trains travel the same route, but the GoldenPass offers a direct service and larger panoramic windows for better views.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass allows free travel on the GoldenPass train, so you won't need a separate ticket.
  • If you hold a Swiss Half Fare Card, you can get a discounted ticket for the GoldenPass train.

    Questions:

    1. Does this train travel the same route as the regular Swiss Trains from Interlaken to Montreaux?

1a. If so, why would I want to take the Golden Pass vs a regular train?

    2. I cannot find pricing for that same route for the GPX. Can you direct me or tell me the price?

    3. Is the GPX train included for free with a Swiss Travel Pass

    4. Is the GPX train fare reduced with a Swiss Half Fare Pass

Thank you for all your help!

    Hi Starj1959,

    1. Yes, the GoldenPass train and regular trains between Interlaken and Montreux travel along the same route. Details about the route here: http://www.myswissalps.com/goldenpass/gettingthere. The GoldenPass Express train between Interlaken and Montreux is a direct service, where with a regular train ror GoldenPass Panoramic/Belle Époque, you will have to switch trains in Spiez and Zweisimmen. Also, GoldenPass trains have bigger panoramic windows.

    2. You can find information about GoldenPass tickets and reservation here: http://www.myswissalps.com/goldenpass/tickets

    3. The Swiss Travel Pass is valid on the GoldenPass i.e. you don’t need a ticket to travel on the GoldenPass train if you have a Swiss Travel Pass.

    4. With a Swiss Half Fare Card, you can get a discounted ticket to travel on the GoldenPass train.

Let us know if you need further info.

    Regards,

    Anna

Golden Pass / Montreux Oberland Bernois (MOB) Railway context

The original ‘Golden Pass’ (term originally coined in the 1930s) is the middle section of the railway that runs between Montreux and Zweisimmen. This railway was built in 1901 – 1905 and has been operated ever since by the Chemin de Fer Montreux – Oberland Bernois (MOB) -translates in English as Montreux – Bernese Oberland Railway. The MOB runs ‘express’ and local stopping trains on the whole route, but the railway was the first in Switzerland to introduce ‘panorama’ coaches in 1976. The ‘Panoramic’ service has increasingly been the main type of train for tourists and in the 2023 timetable most of the hourly trains Montreux – Zweisimmen and vice versa are ‘Panoramic’

<removed by moderator> the ‘Golden Pass’ service is actually three separate trains on three separate railway company’s lines:

Luzern – Interlaken (Zentralbahn, [ZB] red and white narrow gauge trains)

Interlaken – Zweisimmen (BLS railway, blue/white/green standard gauge trains)

Zweisimmen – Montreux (MOB railway, blue and white narrow gauge trains)

However, increasingly, the main express trains Montreuz – Zweisimmen will run through to Interlaken using the technology GoldenpassExpress train sets.
