Rigi day trip from Zurich airport

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a one-day trip to Switzerland next month, staying near Zurich airport, and wants advice on visiting Mt. Rigi. They are uncertain about the best route to take from the airport, whether to start at Weggis or Vitznau, and how to use the Swiss Travel Pass effectively for their journey.

Key takeaways:
  • It's more economical to buy point-to-point tickets instead of a Swiss Travel Pass for just one day of travel.
  • To reach Mt. Rigi from Zurich, take a train to Arth Goldau for the quickest route or consider the scenic options via Luzern.
  • Skip the boat ride if preferred; the timetable will help you find alternative public transport connections.

Hi. We’ll be spending one day in Switzerland next month and will purchase Swiss rail passes. I understand from your website that this would cover the trains up to Mt. Rigi and possibly some of the cable cars as well. We would like to do a day trip from Zurich airport (we will be staying at a hotel near the airport) to Mt. Rigi and back to Zurich. How do you suggest we do this? Where should our first stop from the airport be – should it be Weggis so we can take the cogwheel or cable car up to Rigi? And where do you suggest is the best place to pick up the train back to Zurich again?

    Thanks

    Hi Happy,

I|t wouldn’t be economical to buy a rail pass just for one trip from Zurich airport to Mt. Rigi and return. If this is indeed your only trip on your stay in Switzerland you would be better off buying a point to point ticket.

You can plan your trip with the train timetable here and read all the information you need (including how to get there) about Mt. Rigi here.

Thanks Lucas. The website doesn’t mention getting to Weggis by train though. Is there in fact a train that connects Zurich to Weggis? Is Weggis the best way to start a trip up to Mt. Rigi? And if there is a Weggis train station, how far is it from the place where the cable car leaves from? Or is Vitznau a better place to start? There is so much information that I am a little bit confused.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes, there are a few ways to get to Mt. Rigi.

From Zurich the easiest route would be what the timetable will show you when you search Zurich to Rigi Kulm (via Arth Goldau) which takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes.

The two more scenic routes are via Luzern and will take a bit more time but you will see more on your trip. They are called the Majestic round-trip and the Classic round-trip (they include a boat ride on Lake Luzern). They are explained on my previous post with the link for Mt. Rigi.

    I hope that helps!

    Yes, it does, thank you.

We will skip the boat ride but would like to do the rest of the journey – cable car to Rigi Kaltbad and cogwheel to Rigi Kulm. If we take the train from Zurich, where would we get out to pick up the cable car?

Alternatively, could we take the train to Rigi Kulm as you suggest and then do the reverse – cogwheel to Kaltbad and cable car back to Weggis and pick up a train back to Zurich from there?

Thanks so much for this forum, it is so helpful

Yes you can skip the boat just enter your desired towns in the timetable and it will show you the route to take.

If you don’t take the boat from Weggis back to Luzern you will need to take a bus and then transfer to a train – the timetable will show you everything.
