Montreux to Rochers-de-Naye: Chillon Castle, hiking + travel options

Short summary – read this first

Kiwibird is planning a trip to Montreux in June and wants to take the cog-wheel train to Rochers-de-Naye for views and hiking. They need advice on whether to hike part of the route or take the train both ways while also fitting in a visit to Chillon Castle that day.

Key takeaways:
  • Take the train up to Rochers-de-Naye for the best views and consider a short hike from the restaurant to the ridge if time allows.
  • It's best to plan your adventure in the morning to ensure you have time to visit Chillon Castle later.
  • Check the weather forecast before your trip to ensure visibility.
  • Using the Montreux card will get you a discount on the train fare, which is helpful if you don’t have other travel passes.

    Hi

We will be staying in Montreux in June and we’re considering taking the cog-wheel train from Montreux to Rochers-de-Naye, if the weather is good, for the views and to do some easy/moderate hiking in the area. Would appreciate any tips on whether it is best to hike for 1-2 hours part of the route on the way up or down, or best to take train all the way up and down and just hike at the top? We also have a car that we could use if necessary – in regard to the train price, we will have the Montreux card for a little discount on the train, but will have  no other travel passes. Also is it better to do this adventure in the morning or afternoon for the views and light? We also would like to visit Chillon Castle that day also. Many thanks. Kiwibird

    Hi kiwibird,

Most visitors simply take the train up and down Rochers-de-Naye (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/rochers-de-naye/). At the top, there are 2 restaurants, an alpine flower garden and several observation points to enjoy the views. If you have time for a short hike, you can follow the trail from the restaurant to the ridge and back (abt 1.5km loop). June might be a good time to hike along one of the Narcissus trails. To get to the starting point, just take the train down to Haut-de-Caux and walk towards Glion, the next train stop. I recommend  doing this in the morning so you have plenty of time to catch the train back and do a trip to the Chillon castle (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/chillon-castle/) later in the day.

Be sure to check the weather forecast before your trip.

Thanks Anna. With the Narcissus trails -are they well marked? I also read somewhere that the trails between Haut-de-Caux and Glion follow the road- is that right? Do you know how long it takes to walk down from Haut-de-Caux to Glion? Many thanks Kiwibird

    Hi Kiwibird,

There are several Narcissus trail above Montreux. You can combine the trails from Haut-de-Caux and Glion together or just do one. The Glion loop is about 3km so maybe about 1 to 2 hours? Part of the trail is on paved road.

    Regards,

    Anna
