Sale of SIM Card at Zurich airport

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Ketoeato is arriving at Zurich Airport on 3rd December and is concerned about having enough time to clear customs before the shops close. They want to buy a SIM card from Sunrise for data access to find their way to their Airbnb in Lucerne.

Key takeaways:
  • If you can't buy a SIM card at the airport upon arrival, consider purchasing it in Lucerne the next day, where free WiFi is also available at major train stations.
  • Supermarkets like Migros may sell SIM cards, but it's best to confirm their availability at Zurich Airport.
  • For urgent data needs, look into renting a travel WiFi device at the airport, but it’s recommended to reserve it in advance.

    Dear MySwiss Alps members,

We will be arriving at Zurich Airport on 3 Dec 2022 (Saturday) at 7.50pm.

The Sunrise, Salt and SwissCom shops will close at 9.00pm. Not sure if we would have enough time to clear customs and figure our way to the shops, especially with a grumpy 9 year old after the long flight?

We are data hungry users, and would prefer to buy the SIM card from Sunrise as they offer unlimited data + chat for 24h for 2.5 CHF.

We would definitely need data to find our way to our Air B and B at Lucerne.

    Hi Ketoeato,

If timing is not right, you can always purchase the SIM card the next day in Lucerne. In the meanwhile, there are free Wifi at the airport. Major SBB train stations such as Lucerne also provide free Wifi access.

Further information about purchasing SIM cards are available here: http://www.myswissalps.com/simcard

    Anna

    Thank you, Anna.

Do you know if the supermarkets at Zurich airport sells physical SIM cards? Not necessarily from Sunrise. Just need one to tide us over to find our way to the apartment in the night😂

Noted that the supermarkets at Zurich airports have a later closing time at 11 pm.

    Hi Ketoeato,

I wouldn’t know about supermarkets to be honest. Larger Migros stores may have options. Migros does function as a telecom provider under the M-Budget Mobile brand, but you’d have to check if they sell separate SIM cards and whether they’re available at Zurich Airport.

No worries, Arno, and thank you for your reply.

We may consider the option of buying the much more expensive traveller’s wifi at Zurich airport. Would you know if this can be rented on the spot when we are at Zurich airport (noted that the shop closes at 11.30 pm)?

I’m not sure about renting it on the spot without reservation. Usually you’d book it in advance, so that availability is guaranteed. It can be booked a day before arrival, or even the same day I think. Please find details and links at http://www.myswissalps.com/simcard. You can get in touch with them if you don’t want to book in advance.

It’s indeed more expensive, but also the best option for the data hungry, as you described it 🙂
