Salzburg Station to Lucerne using Swiss Rail Pass

Short summary – read this first

William is traveling from Salzburg to Lucerne by train and has a Swiss Travel Pass. He wants to know if he needs to buy a separate ticket to the Swiss border and if he must validate his pass in Switzerland. Clarification on ticket purchasing procedures is what he needs.

Key takeaways:
  • You do not need to buy a separate ticket to the border town; just use your Swiss Travel Pass after that.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass does not require validation, so you can stay on the train without disembarking.
  • It might be cheaper to buy a direct ticket from Salzburg to Zurich instead of using the Swiss Travel Pass for part of the journey.

Hi, I travelling from Salzburg into Lucerne by rail. I have Swiss Rail Pass and what’s the procedure when buying the tickets at Salzburg? Do I buy the tickets Salzburg till the border town of Switzerland and use the Rail Pass there onwards? Do I have to disembark to go to ticket counter to verify my pass on Switzerland side?
    Your advice is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    William

    Hello Saswilee,

Normally the Swiss Travel Pass, which is the one I assume you’re talking about, doesn’t need validation. Check:

So as long as you hold BOTH the ticket for the Austrian part of the journey AND your Swiss Travel Pass there is NO NEED to disembark from the train.

    Best,
    Steph

Many long distance trains in Europe are covered by ‘global’ fares, so even though you already hold a Swiss travel pass, you may find it comes up cheaper to get a Salzburg – Zurich ticket throughout on the Railjet service
