Saver Day Pass and Swiss Half Fare Card combined

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is feeling overwhelmed with travel options in Switzerland and is looking for advice on using the Swiss Half-fare Card and Saver Day Pass for their upcoming trip. They're specifically asking about ticket prices for trips from Lucerne to Montreux and Engelberg, along with the possibility of adding a Lake Lucerne cruise without extra costs.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider purchasing the Saver Day Pass for just CHF29 when combined with a Swiss Half-fare Card to travel all day on trains, boats, and buses.
  • Check the SBB mobile app for the best deals, especially for routes 30 days in advance, as it can suggest the Saver Day Pass when it's the cheapest option.
  • Make sure to verify fares close to your travel dates, as prices can vary significantly depending on the season.

    Hi.

Finding the travel options overwhelming! I have worked out that buying a half pass will be worth while, however I’m confused when using the saver pass in conjunction.

For example – if travelling on a certain date I’m sure of, if I purchase sbb tickets for Golden Pass from Lucerne to Montreux, the cost is chf68. Am I right in that booking a saver pass for that day in advance I can get the pass for as little as chf39 for the exact same trip?

Also if booking return sbb trip to Engelberg from Lucerne the cost is chf65 (I know the trip up to Titlis is not included). Is it right that if I purchased a saver pass for chf 39, I could do this same journey and maybe add a Lake Lucerne cruise and the price wouldn’t change as it is also covered by saver pass?

Sorry for the length of the question!! Cheers

Hello choicewordz and welcome to MySwissAlps

Your logic is heading in the right direction. But the best price for a 2nd Class Saver Day Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/sa verdaypass and bit.ly/2rkekat) is CHF29 when bought in conjunction with a Swiss Half-fare Card. You can ride trains, boats and buses all day for CHF29.

Also the Half-fare ticket from Luzern to Montreux via Golden Pass Line is CHF38.

Luzern to Engelberg can be down for as little as CHF9.20 one way, CHF18.40 return. See attached. I’m assuming that fare is available to Swiss Half-fare Card holders but someone else will pipe up if that is not correct.

Are you using the SBB Timetable (http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable) to look up prices?

Pro-tip: If you use the SBB mobile app to find fares in the period from 30 days out from your travel date it will offer you the Saver Day Pass if that is the best deal for a particular route.

    Thanks so much rockoyster!

Not sure why my fares were so different….maybe because I was searching in December when we plan to visit. To be honest I’m not entirely sure what I did, but I was using the SBB timetable?

Following your reply I’ve since had a play, and I have managed to find the same fares that you have advised…. much better for the budget! Will adopt your pro tip.

    Really appreciate your help. Cheers
