I have a Saver Day Pass for 30-August and can leave from either Geneva or Chamonix, FR. We need to be in Basel by the end of the day, but have all day to get there. We will have just finished the TMB, so looking for non-hiking ideas. Thank you for any ideas for a great itinerary!! Looking forward to visiting your beautiful country!

    Hi Vcarlett,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

With a Saver Day Pass, you can practically travel anywhere for free in Switzerland. You can find information on the Saver Day Pass here: http://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass

Based on your plans, I would start in Geneva and travel via Bern to Basel. From Geneva to Bern, I’d make a stop in Lausanne and explore a little before continuing to Bern, again stopping here to explore before taking a connecting train to Basel. Depending on how much time you have, you can either spend 1 hour or longer in each city. Or perhaps you can head straight to Bern and plan a short excursion out of the city. You can find options here: http://www.myswissalps.com/bern/activities

From Geneva to Bern, the journey takes about 1.5 hr, and Bern to Basel abt 1 hour. So if you start out early, you can potentially combine a few sightseeing trips in one day. You can use the SBB timetable to check train schedules and plan your routes: http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable

Hope this gives you some ideas.

    regards,

    Anna

Would it be possible to include a ferry ride as on Lac Lemon as part of that itinerary? Thank you.

    Hi Vcarlett,

Yes, you can certainly include a ferry ride on Lake Geneva into your itinerary. You can find further info here: http://www.myswissalps.com/boatlakegeneva. The Saver Day Pass is also valid on the boat. You can view and download the Saver Day Pass validity map here: http://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass/validity

    Regards,

As you may know, the geography of Switzerland divides the country into three parts, the Alps (south), the central plateau (Mittelland) and the north (Jura mountains). As you will have been in the high Alps hiking the TMB, and Basel is in the far north of Switzerland (north of the Jura ) I strongly recommend you take in a tour of the Jura mountains, which are beautiful. For a boat ride you also have the choice of Lac Neuchatel and the Bielersee.

One route I would recommend is as follows:

Geneve – Yverdon les Bains (spa town at the West end of Lac Neuchatel) – Ste Croix (delightful quiet Jura mountain hideaway resort) – Yverdon les Bains – Neuchatel (historic city on many levels with roads crossing other roads on viaducts etc. – Delemont – Basel.

If you are interested in fort towns or roman towns research Romont, Payerne and Avenhes (which you could pull in on your way to Basel.
