Saver Day Pass on Glacier Express

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Kdbigisland is planning a trip on the Glacier Express and seeking clarity on whether to purchase a Saver Day Pass in addition to their Swiss Half Fare Card to get a discounted ticket. They found some confusing pricing information on the SBB website and want to ensure they understand the requirements for their journey.

Key takeaways:
  • You need to purchase the Saver Day Pass separately to get the discounted Glacier Express price with your Swiss Half Fare Card.
  • Always double-check the discount option when booking tickets to avoid confusion with pricing.
  • If in doubt about your ticket or discounts, contact SBB for clarification.

I was about to buy my tickets for Glacier Express on SBB website and noticed that with my half fare card they were offering a great deal with a Saver Day Pass. I am unclear as to whether the price SBB quoted included the cost of the Saver Day Pass or if I have to also purchase a Saver Day Pass? I know I have to purchase the Half-fare card before I travel and based on a few forums I am thinking I also have to purchase the Saver Day Pass if I want that low Glacier Express Price. Thank you!!

I gather from an earlier thread that you have seat reservations on the Glacier Express. You also have a Swiss Half-fare Card. So yes you can buy a Saver Day Pass to cover the journey. The best price you will get the SDP for (with your SHFC) is CHF29 although price varies upwards closer to travel time.

Hi Kdbigisland! I haven’t been able to retrace the SBB offer, so I’m not sure what exactly you’ve seen. In any case, Rockoyster is right that you can get a discounted Saver Day Pass if you also have a Swiss Half Fare Card. And the Saver Day Pass covers panoramic train routes such as the Glacier Express, except for seat reservations.

Note though that in some cases, special SBB offers may be available only for Half-Fare travelcard users, which is a product mainly used by Swiss residents and which isn’t quite the same as the 1 month tourist version called Swiss Half Fare Card. Should you have any doubts about this, I’d advise that you contact the SBB. Please find purchase options for your Swiss Half Fare Card and Saver Day Pass through these links:

    Enjoy your preparations!

Thank you both. I thought finally figured it out, but now not so sure. Thank goodness for the forum and all the information on the website. It made sense when I printed the ticket which had no train info on it but showed it was a Saver Day Pass for a specific date and timeframe, and on MySwissAlps it confirmed that Glacier Express was a train one could use the Saver Day Pass on.

However Annika threw in a wrinkle about the Half-Fare travel card being different from a Swiss Half Fare Card (which is what I would get since in US). It appears after trying to reserve again thru SBB to check this out that if I enter NO DISCOUNT instead of what I had selected ‘Half-Fare card’, that the price of the Saver Pass is 22 CHF more. Extra price not the problem but I am afraid my ticket will be rejected if they see my Saver Day Pass has Reduced Fare 1/2 on it but I do not have the Half-fare travel card, only the Swiss Half Fare Card. Being in the US it is not so easy to contact SBB but I will have to try especially since I have another ticket between Zurich and Zermatt where I also selected Half-Fare. This is not as easy as I had hoped. Maybe I should not have used SBB directly for reservations. The different terminology quite confusing but your website has been a big help.

If anyone knows more on this topic of Half-Fare card versus Swiss Half Fare Card please reply.

Hi Kdbigisland! Yes, I understand it’s quite confusing with so many passes and tickets; some for domestic travelers and other for tourists. From what you’ve told now, it seems that you’re using a quite regular combination of tickets: a Swiss Half Fare Card plus a Saver Day Pass. I was a bit hesitant as I wasn’t sure if you were trying to use another (special) offer meant only for domestic Half-Fare travelcard holders. However, it now seems that you’re simply buying a Saver Day Pass with the discount you’re entitled to as a Swiss Half Fare Card holder. So you should be fine entering “Half-fare travelcard” as discount option.

Thank you Annika. That makes me feel better. I did send an email to SBB so if they reply with a different answer I will be sure to let you know. Thanks again . Debra

You’re good to go Debra, except I thought the lowest price for an SDP with SHFC was CHF29 not CHF22 as you mention.

    From http://www.sbb.ch/en/travelca rds-and-tickets/tickets-for-switzerland/1-day-travelpass/saver-day-pass.html

“Travelling so cheaply by train is fun. With the Saver Day Pass you can travel throughout Switzerland for a day on all routes in the GA area from as little as CHF 29 with a Half Fare travelcard, and from CHF 52 without a Half Fare travelcard. Whether on SBB trains or trains of other rail companies, on boats, buses, trams or postbuses – the Saver Day Pass allows you to travel in many different ways. Furthermore, the Saver Day Pass is available for both 2nd and 1st class. Book your Saver Day Pass today via the smartphone app or the webshop.”

The 22 CHF was just how much more it would cost me when I put No Discount in but still selected Saver Day Pass. That was for a 1st class ticket. So I paid 66 CHF for 1st class Half-fare card Saver Day Pass. With no half-fare discount selected it showed up as 88 CHF. And you were correct I already had the seat reserved as per the requirements for Glacier Express. Thanks again to you both. I think I am getting the hang of it. Your help has been invaluable.

Got it. Didn’t realise you were travelling 1st Class.
