Seat reservations on the Glacier Express

Short summary – read this first

A traveler shares essential information about seat reservations for the Glacier Express, emphasizing the need to book seats in advance for the best experience. They provide insights about preferred seating and how to upgrade from 2nd to 1st Class with a Swiss Travel Pass during the journey.

Key takeaways:
  • Make your seat reservations for the Glacier Express 3 months in advance to secure your preferred seat.
  • If you have a 2nd Class Swiss Travel Pass and want to travel in 1st Class, you can purchase a specific upgrade at any SBB station or via the SBB Mobile App.
  • To ensure you get the correct price for a class upgrade, use either the SBB website or app and nominate your Half-fare Card reduction.

Seat reservations are required to travel on the Glacier Express. You can find out how to make reservations at http://www.myswissalps.com/glacierexpress/tickets.

If you scroll right down to the bottom of that page you will find some links under “More Information”. The first link takes you to the official GEX website where you have the opportunity to pick your own seats. None of the options higher up the page give you that option. They just try to group people together, but which side of the train you end up on is pot luck.

In my experience seats at the bottom of the screen on the seating plan on the official GEX site are on the right heading west to east. Not sure if that helps or guarantees anything.

If you are going West to East you will arrive at Chur on the right-hand side of the train and depart on the left-hand side of the train.

If you are travelling with a 2nd Class Swiss Travel Pass but want to travel 1st Class on any particular trip (including the Glacier Express) you can buy a Class upgrade at any SBB station or using the SBB Mobile App or here bit.ly/2rZEIXh. You need to buy a route specific upgrade.

If you buy on line you need to nominate a Half-fare Card reduction to get the correct price (using either website of SBB app). An upgrade will cost half the difference between 1st and 2nd class full-fares.

Seat reservations can be made 3 months in advance. If your are using a travel pass then you don’t need to have already purchased it prior to making seat reservations; just so long as you have a valid pass or ticket when you board the train.
