4 days of sightseeing from base in Lucerne

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning their first trip to Switzerland, spending 4 days in Lucerne and 1 day in Lugano. They want to visit Mt. Pilatus and Jungfraujoch, and they're unsure whether to book a tour or arrange transportation by themselves. They seek tips for independent travel and additional sightseeing suggestions for their visit in mid September.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider taking a guided tour to Jungfraujoch, as it can take around 11 hours from Lucerne, making it a long day.
  • Make use of the SBB timetable for train schedules and planning your trips.
  • For an easier experience, think about booking the Swiss Travel Pass, which offers unlimited travel on the Swiss public transport network.

This is our first trip to Switzerland and only have 4 days in Lucerne and 1 day in Lugano. We are planning a trip to Mt. Pilatus and are planning on booking the Golden Round Trip. We would also like to travel to Jungfrau. Is it best to do a tour, or try and figure out how to book trains on our own to get there? If booking on your own is best way, any tips on how to do that would be appreciated. Any other sight seeing/tour suggestions from anyone would be great. We will be traveling mid September. Thank you.

    Hi kalex, welcome to MySwissAlps!

A trip to Jungfraujoch from Lucerne takes a lot of time. Count on 11 hours or so. If you don’t mind that it’s fine of course. Whether you should take a guided tour or do it on your own is a personal preference. You’ll find details of each option here:

    Hi Kalex-

In addition to Arno’s comments, I would add that the SBB timetable is very useful, and full of good information if you dig in a bit:

    A map helps, too:
