Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Kkc is planning a trip to Appenzell for 3 nights and is looking for activities to do without a car. They want recommendations for public transport options and nearby destinations to explore during their stay.

Key takeaways:
  • If you're staying in Appenzell for 3 nights or more, you'll receive a complimentary Appenzell Holiday Card that includes free local transport and access to selected excursions.
  • Consider buying a 3-day Swiss Travel Pass for trips outside of Appenzell, such as to Zurich, Chur, or Lucerne, as it allows for easy travel across the country.

    Hi Kkc,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Guests staying 3 nights or more in hotels in Appenzell will get a complimentary Appenzell Holiday Card which includes free use of local public transport and excursions on selection mountains and attractions in the region. These include the Ebenalp, Hoher Kasten and the Appenzeller Cheese Dairy.

If you are planning to do day trips out side of the region, I would recommend getting a 3-day Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/). You can allocate this three days for longer trips – perhaps day trips to Zurich, Chur or Lucerne. Appenzell to Zurich (https://www.myswissalps.com/town/zurich/) by train is roughly 1 h 50 mins, so a day trip is definitely doable. For a day trip to Lucerne (https://www.myswissalps.com/town/lucerne/), I recommend taking the Voralpen Express (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/voralpen-express/) with a combined day trip to St Gallen.

    Good luck with your planning.

    Regards,
    Anna

    Hi Kkc,
You’ll enjoy your time in the two Appenzeller Half Cantons. It’s a lovely part of Switzerland and relatively unspoilt.
The Appenzeller Holiday Card (https://www.appenzell.ch/en/accommodation/appenzeller-holiday-card.html) that Anna mentions is very good value. You have to stay for three consecutive nights or more in the same accommodation so, unless you are changing where you are staying, you should get it.
When we last went there the hotel was good enough to send us the card ahead of our holiday so that we could use it for part of our inward journey and shaved a day from our wonderful Swiss Travel Passes.
