Six days in Jungfrau area: which rail pass(es)?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named emz92 is planning a six-night trip in the Jungfrau area, with four nights in Interlaken and two in Grindelwald. They are considering visiting Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn but are unsure whether to buy the Berner Oberland Pass along with the Swiss Half Fare Card or just rely on the Half Fare Card.

Key takeaways:
  • The Swiss Half Fare Card allows you to buy tickets at half-price, making it ideal if you plan to purchase individual tickets for a few trips.
  • Consider the Jungfrau Travel Pass for free travel in the Jungfrau region, especially if you plan to use public transport frequently.
  • Purchasing tickets with the Swiss Half Fare Card is straightforward; buy tickets online and present them when requested during inspections.

Hi there – I’m hoping someone might have some advice or recommendations for me.

My partner and I are spending six nights in the Jungfrau area – four nights in Interlaken and two nights in Grindelwald. We will probably visit one or both of Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn while we’re there, but we also want to see some of the Lake Thun and Lake Brienz areas.

I was originally planning to purchase the Berner Oberland Pass for four days, together with the Swiss Half Fare Card. However I’m now wondering if there is any real advantage in purchasing the Berner Oberland Pass as well, or whether it might be worth just purchasing the Swiss Half Fare Card?

To me it looks like the discounts for Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn are the same with both the Berner Oberland Pass and the Swiss Half Fare Card – is that right?

    Hi emz92,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

The Swiss Half Fare Card allows you to purchase transportation tickets at half-price. If you want to avoid purchasing tickets fo each trip, you should consider getting a railpass.

For a trip up to 1 week in the Jungfrau region, consider purchasing a regional pass such as the Jungfrau Travel Pass. This pass provides free travelling in the Jungfrau region, as explained here: http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfrautravelpass. You can view the validity map here: http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfrautravelpass/validity

If you want more flexibility, you might be interested to get the Berner Oberland Pass. This railpass covers a wider area including the Jungfrau region. You can view the validity map here: http://www.myswissalps.com/regionalpassberneseoberland/validity.

If you have a Swiss Half Fare Card, you can purchase the Jungfrau Travel Pass and the Berner Oberland Pass at a reduced price.

    Thanks for your reply, Anna.

Is it particularly difficult to purchase tickets as you go with the Half Fare Card? I’m just not sure I will use public transport enough to justify an unlimited travel pass and probably wouldn’t get one just for the convenience of not having to buy tickets.

    Hi emz92,

Depending on your itinerary, using just the Swiss Half Fare Card may be sufficient.

Purchasing tickets with the Swiss Half Fare Card is easy. There’s no need to link it to the SBB Mobile app if you have one. Simply purchase tickets from the app of website at the discounted price before your trip. Ticket inspections are carried out randomly on board. Just present your tickets and the Swiss Half Fare Card when requested.

You can find further info on how to use the Swiss Half Fare Card here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard/howtouse

    Regards,

    Anna
