Stay in Wengen or Interlaken for July family trip

Short summary – read this first

Aaru21, a family of four, is visiting Switzerland for two nights in late July and is deciding between staying in Interlaken or Wengen. They want to explore the Jungfrau area, do some short hikes, enjoy city walks, and take a lake boat tour. They need advice on which location would offer easier transportation and better scenery.

Key takeaways:
  • Choose Wengen for closer access to alpine trails and mountain views.
  • Interlaken is better for a central location with shops, restaurants, and quick lake access.
  • Both locations are well-connected for day trips, so either can work.
  • Consider the Swiss Travel Pass for easy travel between destinations during your stay.
  • Wengen offers a more peaceful atmosphere away from the tourist crowds.

Hello We (family of 2 adults and 2 teens) are visiting Switzerland in the last week of July.

and staying 2 nights in Interlaken or Wengen area. I have booked hotels at both places. Hotel in Wengen is a little bit pricier than Interlaken. Please let me know which will be easier to stay in considering time we spend on transportation, and also the beauty of the area. We want to visit Jungfrau area, couple of short hikes, enjoy and walk around cities and one of the lake boat tours.

    thank you!!

    Hi Aaru21,

If you like a mountain views and plan to explore a few alpine trails in the Jungfrau region, my vote would go to Wengen. It may be pricier but you will be close to the mountains and the trails. Interlaken would be a good base if you like to be in the centre of town, close to variety of shops and restaurants and with quick access to Lake Brienz and Lake Thun.

You certainly won’t go wrong with either option though. Transportation link between Interlaken and Wengen is regular and planning day trips from wither destination should not be a problem.

I am currently in Wengen and went to Interlaken yesterday. Inerlaken was hot and humid and is expected to warm up next week. Wengen is moderate, very nice at this time. Due to the weather, I will be aiming for the mountain destinations, so Interlaken is not one for me. The number of tourists is plentiful so trains are packed.

    Hello Aaru21,

Interlaken is a good starting point for excursions to the Jungfrau and the Lauterbrunnen Valley but also for excursions on the lakes, Brienzer Rothorn mountain, Aare gorge or to the amazing waterfalls of the Haslital. If you want to be closer to the mountains, the villages of Grindelwald or Wengen are more suitable.

    Have a great trip!

We stayed in Wengen last summer and were in awe of the mountain scenery and the amazing views from our hotel! We also had a day trip to Interlaken to do a cruise on Lake Brienz, stroll around Brienz and have lunch by the lake before heading back to Interlaken. While we did some sightseeing in the town itself, at the end of the day we were very happy to leave the throngs of tourists behind and head back to Wengen, which was a short commute away–maybe 40 minutes? Wengen is so much smaller and peaceful, even though they have their fair share of tourists too. I suggest keeping your hotel reservation there.
