Sunset cruise on Lake Lucerne in summer

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Lake Lucerne for Summer 2023 and is considering whether to book a sunset cruise or simply take the standard boat from Lucerne to Weggis. They are looking for clarity on travel logistics and if the Swiss Travel Pass covers their ride.

Key takeaways:
  • Use the boat from Lucerne to Weggis instead of booking the sunset cruise for a more flexible schedule.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass covers sunset cruises, but extra charges may apply for meals.
  • Reserve a table online or at the landing stage at least 2 hours before boarding for the sunset cruise.

    Hi davey1108,

The sunset cruise on Lake Lucerne is a roundtrip that takes about 2.5 hours. It’s a nice experience but not necessary if you have a full schedule and your itinerary already includes a boat trip from Lucerne to Weggis.

    Enjoy your trip.

    Hi Anna,

Does the Swiss Travel Pass cover this boat ride for free or is it additional charge and do you recommend booking ahead of time or can you do day of or day before? Thanks Cindy

    HI Cindy,

Yes, the Swiss Travel Pass is valid on the sunset cruises on Lake Lucerne. However you might need to pay extra for the meals on board. It’s recommended to reserve a table in advance at least 2 hours before boarding. You can do this online or directly at any boat landing stage on Lake Lucerne.

    regards,

    Anna

    Two recommendations:

    1) don’t book a special cruise, just check the sunset times and the normal boat timetables

    2) if you are staying in Weggis the sunset will be just as good from the lake shore, you don’t even need to be on the boat!
