Swiss Half Fare Card vs Jungfrau Travel Pass

Short summary – read this first

Inês is planning her first trip to Switzerland with elderly relatives at the end of April, focusing on exploring the Interlaken region. She is looking for advice on whether to choose the Swiss Half Fare Card or the Jungfrau Travel Pass to save on activities and transport during their 5-day trip, which includes visits to various scenic locations.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider getting the Jungfrau Travel Pass if you'll be doing multiple mountain excursions in the region to save on individual ticket costs.
  • The Swiss Half Fare Card is better for broader travel across Switzerland and allows you to buy discounted tickets in advance.
  • Buy the ticket to Jungfraujoch close to your travel date for the best weather conditions, as they don't tend to sell out.

    Hello friends 🙂

I need your help deciding which one of these two would be better for my trip, the Swiss half fare card or the Jungfrau travel pass.

I will be travelling for the first time to Switzerland in the end of April with some elderly relatives and decided that the best for their comfort would be to rent a car as we plan to see a lot of Switzerland. However we will be spending 2 nights in Interlaken and I think it would have more vantages to buy a pass than separate tickets for activities in that region.

    The itinerary is this:

    Day 1 – Zurich – Lucern

Day 2- Mount Pilatus – Brienz- Harder Kulm – Griendelwald – Bachalpsee

    Day 3 – Junfraujoch- Lauterbrunnen – Murren – Wengen – Blausee – Seebergsee

    Day 4 – Spiez – Oberhöfen – Bern – Fribourg – Gruyeres – Montreux

    Day 5 – Montreux – Gevene

I know the Swiss half fare would give discount to mount Pilatus and the Jungfrau pass would not. But I am not sure If a can travel freely in the interlaken region with only the ticket to the top of Europe (and visit the regions of Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, Mürren, Wengen).

From what I have read online, I also see that if I get the half fare, I can buy all tickets before the trip, but if I get the Jungfrau, I would have to buy the ticket to the top of Europe in the rail station, right? Does it tend to sell out?

Let me know what you think would be more advantageous.

Thank you very much in advance,

    Inês

    Hi Ines,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Often travellers get the Swiss Half Fare Card (SHFC) if they’re travelling with a car. But this depends on one’s itinerary too. If your itinerary is focused on a specific region, perhaps getting a regional pass such as the Jungfrau Travel Pass (JTP) might be practical. The advantage of having the SHFC is it is valid nationwide although you will have to buy tickets (discounted of course) for each trip. In comparison, the JTP has limited coverage but it convenient as you don’t have to buy tickets for each trip except to Jungfraujoch.

In your case, a 3 or 4-day JTP certainly makes sense if you plan to do a lot of mountain excursions such as to Wengen, Mannlichen, Grindelwald First, Mürren and Schilthorn in addition to Jungfraujoch. And if you plan to go on boat trips on Lake Brienz and Lake Thun. Perhaps you should make a list of all your excursions and sum up the cost to see if the JTP is worth it, or if you’re better off just getting the SHFC. Here’s a quick guide to help you compare the cost and choose the best rail pass: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass

    Purchase to buy online:

By the way, it’s recommended to buy the Jungfraujoch ticket just before your trip, after you’ve checked the weather forecast for the day. No point going up really if it’s rainy and foggy. Don’t worry, the tickets won’t sell out. You can also buy the ticket online here: http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch/tickets

    I hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anna
