Swiss Travel Pass valid to and from Germany?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Katherinehor is planning an 8-day trip from 9-16 December, traveling by train from Frankfurt to Interlaken and returning from Montreux to Frankfurt. She asks whether the Swiss Travel Pass covers these journeys, as she noticed similar ticket prices for part of the route. It's important to clarify that the Swiss Travel Pass is not valid for these parts of the trip.

Key takeaways:
  • You need to buy tickets for the German leg of your journey to Basel, as the Swiss Travel Pass is only valid within Switzerland.
  • Similar pricing for German routes can occur due to railway ticketing principles; sometimes a longer trip costs the same as a shorter journey along the same route.

Hi everyone, I have an 8 day Swiss Pass from 9-16 Dec. I’m taking a train from Frankfurt to Interlaken on 9 dec, and taking a train from Montreux back to Frankfurt on 16 dec. (My daughter loves train rides so 5 hours on trains is Heaven to her). Can I check if the Swiss Pass covers either journey? Bec when I checked on the Trainline site the prices of tickets from Frankfurt to Interlaken is exactly the same price as Frankfurt to Basel (where the change in train takes place). Same from Montreux to Frankfurt. Appreciate any advice on this. Thank you!

    Hi Katherinehor,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

The Swiss Travel Pass is valid only for travels within Switzerland. You will need to buy tickets to cover the German leg of your journey to the Swiss border (in this case I assume it’s Basel). You can find more information about how to use the Swiss Travel Pass here: https://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass (click on the validity tab and you’ll find a link to download a map that shows you the STP’s validity area).

For information about tickets to/from Germany: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/germany

    Hope this helps!

    Regards,

    Anna

The clue is in the name! The Swiss Travel Pass is only valid within Switzerland.

The reason that you have seen similar prices for Germany – Basel and Germany to Interlaken is due to the age old principle of railway ticketing across the world, whereby certain longer journeys are no more expensive than a shorter journey over part of the same route.

Because this principle applies, you may indeed find that a ticket from Germany to Interlaken on ‘day 1’ is cheaper than switching to a Swiss travel system ticket or pass at Basel.
